Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Black History Month in our Parks: Ralph D. House Community Park February is Black History Month, and we are taking a look at some of our parks named after prominent Black leaders in San Francisco history. This week, we're looking at Ralph D. House Community Park, which was renovated 2019. In 2010, this park was named in honor of Ralph Dewitt House, a park champion who devoted himself to public service. House was a driving force and leader in ensuring open space in the Bayview community. House founded the Bayview Hill Neighborhood Association and was its president from 1985 through 2004. He volunteered his time tirelessly and empowered others to advocate for their communities. Be sure to visit this park soon and take in the beautiful views of the city's southeast. Ralph D. House Community Park National Girls and Women in Sports Day We are happy to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day today, February 3. SF Building Trades Council Article Nighttime Closure of Shelley Drive in McLaren Park In response to neighborhood safety concerns in McLaren Park, and in collaboration with Supervisors Hillary Ronen, Shamann Walton, Ahsha Safaí, the San Francisco Police Department, and the community, we are implementing a temporary nighttime closure of the Shelley Drive loop from 6pm – sunrise through March 31. During this trial period, access to Shelley Drive at Cambridge Street and the eastern Mansell/Shelley Drive intersection will be closed. If you have questions or comments please contact rpdinfo at sfgov.org. Winter Lawn Closures in our Parks We are in the midst of winter when days are shorter, temperatures are lower and the weather is wet. During this time of year, our parks can develop natural soggy spots, especially in our lawns. Please note that our staff might close off soggy sections in our parks to protect the turf. If you notice an area that is soggy, please avoid using to ensure that turf doesn’t sustain significant damage. The SkyStar Wheel, brought to San Francisco last year as the intended centerpiece for Golden Gate Park’s 150th Anniversary, has been largely closed due to COVID-19 restrictions. The wheel was originally scheduled to leave the park’s Music Concourse in March 2021. Extending its residence would allow time to fulfill public expectations and provide economic stimulus as San Francisco recovers from the global pandemic.
