ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
The wait is over! Now you can ride, slide, climb and play with the recent re-opening of your favorite Little Puffer miniature steam train and Elinor Friend Playground!
Please note that the Little Puffer is running with limited capacity rides. With the playground, we are limiting the number of children at any given time and request that parents ensure that their kids are wearing masks while playing and staying socially distant from one another. Our environmental services team are cleaning and disinfecting the playground regularly.
As part of our relationship with Recreation and Park Department, we provide animal and veterinary care for the famous swans, Blanche and Blue Boy, who reside at the Palace of Fine Arts lake. Recently, the female swan was experiencing weakness and Blanche was brought to the Zoo’s veterinary hospital for diagnosis and treatment. Blue Boy was subsequently brought in for a check-up where they were reunited. They will stay at the Zoo for an interim period and we hope they can return home soon.
Visible progress is being made week-by-week on the new snow leopard habitat expansion and we’re happy to report we are close to completion! Snow leopards are among the most elusive and secretive of cats, and the new outdoor habitat allows our snow leopards climbing opportunities, elevated platforms and amazing vantage points for our guests. Most importantly, the expansion allows us to continue our successful breeding program for this critically endangered species, and bring awareness to their plight in the wild, and the need to protect them. We’ll keep you updated on opening dates!
Speaking of exciting upcoming dates and snow leopards, please Save the Date for Thursday, April 29th, for our first ever Virtual ZooFest! With the COVID pandemic still limiting in-person gatherings, we are moving our annual gala to a fun and informative online format, focused on sharing with you all what’s been happening at the Zoo since last March. You’ll get an update on our snow leopard exhibit completion, as well as virtual behind the scenes tours of our favorite animals to learn how they have adapted and thrived during the pandemic shutdown. Table purchasers will also received some surprise animal “guests” during their virtual breakouts. Save the Date and stay tuned for more info!

A special thanks to our guardian level members, whose major donor financial support of the Zoo has been critically important to enabling the Zoo and Gardens to weather the shutdown and reduced capacity periods of the ongoing COVID pandemic.
As one way of thanking our guardians now that we have been allowed to reopen, we are able to offer guardians the option to make pre-reservations to visit the Zoo without having to choose a specific entry time. This provides greater flexibility and reduces the advance scheduling time needed to make reservations.
Guardian membership starts at $1,000 annually, and includes additional recognition benefits such as free parking and train/carousel rides. If you are interested in guardian membership, please contact the Development Department at development at sfzoo.org (mailto:development at sfzoo.org) .
We are excited to the launch the Gorilla on the Line campaign and hope to collect as many old mobile phones for recycling as possible. Recycling old phones helps reduce the demand for coltan, a mineral used in phones, and protects gorilla habitat in Africa. Now through World Gorilla Day on September 24, drop off your old cell phones at SF Zoo. Better yet, host a cell phone recycle collection in your class, school, or club to help save gorillas!
