Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Willie "Woo Woo" Wong Playground Opens for Lunar New Year Mayor London Breed announced the opening of our Willie “Woo Woo” Wong Playground last week—a center for community engagement and recreation for all ages in the heart of Chinatown. The top-to-bottom renovation includes an expanded children’s play area, new clubhouse featuring public art, and improved access to the park. In March, the City will open a new Community Hub at the clubhouse, which will provide approximately 12 students with in-person support for distance learning, healthy meals and snacks, and recreation opportunities. San Francisco Chronicle Article "I Left My Park in San Francisco" Podcast Episode: Can't Stop Love The year 2020 turned our world upside down, and yet it couldn’t stop love. Trapped in our own homes, parks became essential oases for San Franciscans in search of fresh air and a little sanity – and for some people, a chance to get down on one knee. Listen to our Valentine’s Day podcast episode where love takes center stage as several couples realize that there’s no time like a pandemic – and no place like Golden Gate Park – to set the scene for a romantic proposal. Can't Stop Love on Soundcloud Black History Month in our Parks: Nate Thurmond and K.C. Jones In honor of Black History Month, we are taking a look at some of our parks named after prominent Black leaders in San Francisco history. This week, we're looking at a pair of late basketball legends in Nate Thurmond and K.C. Jones. Nate Thurmond was a former Golden State Warriors player who is considered one of the best centers to ever play and is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Warriors organization for more than four decades as both a player and a Community Relations Ambassador, making a significant impact in San Francisco and Bay Area communities. Today, the storied basketball courts in the Panhandle are named in his honor. K.C. Jones grew up in San Francisco, attending Commerce High School and the University of San Francisco, where he won two NCAA championships. He went on to win eight championships as a player with the Boston Celtics, as well as an additional two as a head coach with the team. He also won an Olympic gold medal and is one of only eight players to win an NCAA championship, NBA championship, and a gold medal. He is in both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. Bayview Park K.C. Jones Playground is named in his honor, located in the neighborhood where he grew up and learned to play sports. Summer Jobs for Teens Over the past 60 years, our Workreation program has provided young people with early work experience in our parks. Teens, 14-17, who either live or go to school in San Francisco, are eligible to apply for a Workreation job. Teens can apply for summer positions in day camps, rec centers or parks. We hire approximately 200 teens for the summer. The pay rate is minimum wage (currently $17.16/hr) and teens can work up to 20-25 hours per week during the summer. Types of jobs include Camp Assistant, Recreation Center/Facility Assistant, and Gardening Assistant. For more information and to apply, click the link below. Application deadline is Friday, February 26 at 4:30 p.m. Summer Jobs for Teens Join the Monuments and Memorials Advisory Committee The San Francisco Arts Commission is seeking qualified candidates to participate in the Monuments and Memorials Advisory Committee (MMAC), a body that will host hearings with community members and establish the criteria and guidelines by which to determine the future of historic monuments in the City's art collection. This initiative is a partnership between the San Francisco Arts Commission, the Human Rights Commission, and the Recreation and Park Department. The MMAC's charge is to examine the history of monuments in the public realm in San Francisco, the individuals, events and ideals they venerate, and how the narratives associated with these monuments align—or do not—with San Francisco's values today.
