San Francisco Chronicle Article Black History Month in our Parks: Minnie and Lovie Ward Rec Center In honor of Black History Month, we are taking a look at some of our parks named after prominent Black leaders in San Francisco history. To close out the month, we’re focusing on the late Minnie and Lovie Ward, a couple devoted to improving their neighborhood. Minnie and Lovie were the co-founders of the Ocean View-Merced Heights-Ingleside (OMI) Neighbors In Action organization that actively fought to rid their neighborhood of drugs, violence and crime in the late 80s and 90s. Despite having their home fired upon in retaliation for their work, they never flinched in their pursuit to better the OMI and San Francisco. In addition to fighting neighborhood crime as activists, they campaigned to improve the area's schools, fix the branch library and to build a recreation complex. When time came to renovate their local Ocean View Playground and build the new recreation center in 2005, there was no better choice than to name the new facility after these integral community leaders. Today, the 10-acre Minnie and Lovie Ward Recreation Center serves as a hub for the OMI community and is one of the top park complexes in the city. The facility features sprawling turf fields that host baseball, soccer and other sports; an indoor gymnasium that serves as a basketball court and community event space; and outdoor basketball and tennis courts, along with a weight room, community center, class spaces, kitchen, central courtyard, community garden, and playground.
