[House] Sea turtle update and more!

ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
We are proud to be an integral part of the zoo community through AZA’s SAFE (Saving Animals from Extinction) program. As you are no doubt aware, sea turtles by the thousands were “cold-stunned” when freezing winter temperatures made the waters of South Padre Island in the Texas Gulf Coast unusually frigid. AZA called the alarm for help, and even though we couldn’t send staff due to COVID restrictions, we reached out to local media to raise monies for the rescue effort (SFGate (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=da2f6e720c&e=7683a9aed3) , KRON4 (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=a2a37e12df&e=7683a9aed3) , KCBS Radio (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=d34be21ea0&e=7683a9aed3) ). As of this writing, our friends at the Texas State Aquarium report that they were able to rehabilitate and release 950 turtles back into the Gulf this week, and Sea Turtles, Inc.
released an extraordinary 2,240, quite an accomplishment as these turtles can weigh anywhere from 25 to 400 lbs.! (Photo from Texas State Aquarium.)

International Polar Bear Day is on February 27! This year's focus is to protect denning families, especially moms and cubs, across the Arctic. As more industry moves to the Arctic, it is more important than ever to pretect denning habitats and help ensure the survival of every single cub.
