A WEEK OF CONSERVATION CELEBRATIONS!
Our Own Big Joe!
Join us as we celebrate our very own "Big Joe" the mandrill this week, as we commemorate the inauguration of Joe Biden, our nation's 46th American President! We commend President Biden for his commitment to diversity and gender equality in staffing his administration. As an organization with 70% female staffing, the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens applauds all efforts for diversity and representation in our national workforce.
San Francisco Forktail
Did you know that the San Francisco forktail damselfly, whose natural habitat is a few isolated water seeps in the city, is one of the rarest damselflies in the United States? Our staff works year-round (even during our mandated closure) to breed these damselflies since their native home areas are under threat of eradication. Working with the National Park Service, we re-introduced them to areas with the hope that additional populations will be established and allow this special invertebrate to remain in San Francisco. We are proud to announce that 14,821 damselflies were released at Mountain Lake in 2020. We look forward to continuing this important work in 2021!

Initiative to Combat Zoonotic Diseases
The suspected cause of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic was likely a wild animal found in a live animal market that transmitted a disease to humans. These “zoonotic” diseases are a threat to both human and animal and happen globally. Recently, San Francisco Zoo & Gardens and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) launched a new initiative, (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=999fd57ef7&e=7683a9aed3) “Reduce the Risk: A Crisis in Human and Animal Health” to combat zoonotic diseases in wildlife trade. As one of the few zoos with a dedicated Animal Wellness & Conservation Center, SF Zoo & Gardens is well-poised to contribute expertise and provide input to combat the wildlife trade.
