Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Statewide Stay-at-Home Order Lifted, San Francisco Enters Purple Tier After the statewide stay-at-home order was lifted earlier this week, San Francisco entered the purple tier, easing a number of health restrictions on activities. These changes will go into effect citywide on Thursday, January 28 after the most recent health order was released today, January 27. Some to parks include: Outdoor Recreation: Up to three households may engage in recreational activities that allow social distancing, including low-contact sports such as hiking, biking, dancing, and including those that share equipment such as balls and Frisbees. Golf and Tennis: Expands to allow foursomes for golf, but limits to one household per cart and requires staggered tee times. Doubles tennis may be played between members of up to three different households. Tennis players from different households may not share equipment and must maintain at least six feet of physical distance from each other at all times. Pickleball remains limited to singles per state requirements. Outdoor Fitness: The 12-person cap is removed on outdoor fitness so long as social distancing can be met. The fitness class cap increases to 25. Small Gatherings: Members of up to three households with a maximum of 12 people total may gather outdoors if social distance can be maintained and no food or drink is being consumed. If food or drink is being consumed, only members from two households of up to six people total is allowed. Participants outside of the same household must remain at least six feet apart from each other. Outdoor Museums and Zoos: Outdoor operations for museums and zoos may resume, though zoos are capped at 50% capacity not including personnel. Outdoor Family Entertainment Centers: Family entertainment such as skate parks may resume outdoor operations. Note that these changes may be implemented incrementally by our department as we move into February. Covid Guidance & Resources Rec and Park's Recreation Programming in 2020 Did you know? We provided 112 online classes, 27 summer day camps, and hundreds of hours of free online programming for seniors, adults and youth, and operated emergency child and youth care programs and community hubs for our most vulnerable students last year? While we weren't immune to the effects of the pandemic in 2020 and were faced with unprecedented challenges, our amazing staff continued to serve the people of San Francisco and provided opportunities to learn, connect, and get out and play. Read more about our accomplishments in 2020 with our community report at the link below. 2020 Community Report Nighttime Closure of Shelley Drive in McLaren Park In response to neighborhood safety concerns in McLaren Park, and in collaboration with Supervisors Hillary Ronen, Shamann Walton, Ahsha Safaí, the San Francisco Police Department, and the community, we are implementing a temporary nighttime closure of the Shelley Drive loop from 6pm – sunrise from January 15 – March 31. During this trial period, access to Shelley Drive at Cambridge Street and the eastern Mansell/Shelley Drive intersection will be closed. If you have questions or comments please contact rpdinfo at sfgov.org. Winter Lawn Closures in our Parks We are in the midst of winter when days are shorter, temperatures are lower and the weather is wet. During this time of year, our parks can develop natural soggy spots, especially in our lawns. Please note that our staff might close off soggy sections in our parks to protect the turf. If you notice an area that is soggy, please avoid using to ensure that turf doesn’t sustain significant damage. In addition, to report any park issues while we're in the midst of this inclement weather, please utilize 311.
