Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Golden Gate Heights Park Playground Reopening on July 20 Join the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department and the San Francisco Parks Alliance for the reopening celebration of the playground at Golden Gate Heights Park on Tuesday, July 20 beginning at 11:30 a.m. Help us celebrate the recently completed renovation, which includes a new children’s play area, nature exploration area, new irrigation at the upper field, upgrades to the picnic area and more. The event will feature a ribbon cutting, speaking program and giveaways! The renovation is part of the Let’sPlaySF! Initiative, a partnership that seeks to inspire creativity and play throughout the city by renovating some of the city's most timeworn playgrounds. For more information about the project, click the link below. Golden Gate Heights Park Renovation July is Park and Recreation Month July is National Park and Recreation Month! With everyone living within a 10-minute walk of a park in San Francisco, be sure to get out to your local park or discover a new one this July and share your experience with us! Park & Recreation Month Shine on SF: Golden Trees As San Francisco opens up, Shine On SF is helping neighbors reconnect with their communities and the places they care about. Trees placed in colorful planters will be decorated with golden cards and showcased at pop-up activations in public spaces throughout the city, including parks such as Golden Gate Park, In Chan Kaajal, Union Square and more! Answer the prompt “What makes San Francisco shine?” and place it on a Golden Tree. Each site will also feature a different craft activity. At the end of the summer, the project will culminate in an art installation where the cards and the trees come together. For more information on how to participate, click the link below. Shine on SF SFPAL Youth Football and Cheer at Kimbell Playground Join SFPAL for its youth football and cheer teams at Kimbell Field in the Western Addition. This free program for boys and girls ages 7 to 12 runs from August through November and is associated with the Bay Area Pop Warner Youth Football and Cheer. Hone your skills or learn something new in digital arts, performing arts or visual arts. To register for the second summer session, beginning on July 12, click the link below. Virtual Teen Programming Fracchia Prize 2021 High School Essay Contest Deadline July 15 Participate in the San Francisco Historical Society's third annual Fracchia Prize essay contest. The contest, co-sponsored with San Francisco City Guides, is open to any student attending a high school in San Francisco. Interested candidates are required to submit an original and properly cited written work consisting of between 1,200 and 1,600 words, based on the prompt, which is civic monuments. The top three essay winners will receive cash prizes, including $2,500 for first place, along with publication of their essays. Need inspiration? Fracchia Prize SF Junior Open Tournament at Goldman Tennis Center from July 19 to 23 We're excited to share the return of the San Francisco Junior Open to Golden Gate Park at the newly renovated Lisa and Douglas Goldman Tennis Center! The tournament, hosted by the Tennis Coalition, USTA NorCal, and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, with support from Taube Philanthropies, will include multiple skill levels. There will be a Level 7 Challenger tournament for boys and girls for age divisions 12s and 14s, as well as a Level 4 tournament for age divisions 16s and 18s.
