Arctic Sea Ice Day is coming up on July 15 and was created by our friends at Polar Bears International (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=0114372015&e=7683a9aed3) to draw attention to the ice loss taking place in the Arctic. Sea ice is to the ocean as soil is to a forest: it supports the entire Arctic food chain. Saving Arctic sea is good for polar bears and people. Now is the moment to rethink our use of fossil fuels, the energy of the past that traps too much heat around our planet, and look for ways to use more energy that comes from the sun, wind, and water. SAFE & FUN SUMMER ACTIVITIES WITH YOUR KIDS

Pediatrician Anita Juvvadi of Stanford Children’s Health has some answers for families looking for the best ways to keep kids active and safe this summer.

“We want the stimulation, we want the exercise, we want the sun exposure,” she said. “So much of their socialization has been limited” during the pandemic.

For parents wondering if summer camp is a safe option, Dr. Juvvadi said, “Go for it!”

Camps are safe as long as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines are being followed. “As long as everybody’s tested, overnight camps should be completely safe,” she said.

Summer will let kids reconnect in person and build the social skills they missed out on this year. Dr. Juvvadi encourages parents to find ways to have safe peer interactions for their children.

“Teach the child that mask wearing is associated with fun activities,” she added.

Earlier this week, on July 3, we celebrated World Meerkat Day! Meerkats are members of the mongoose family and live in the semi-arid savannas of southern Africa. They live in underground burrows in large groups of up to 40 individuals, called a mob, and work together in keeping watch and scaring off predators. Make sure to stop by and visit our mob on your next visit!
