ZOO HIGHLIGHTS

We're excited to announce the birth of a female greater kudu calf. The calf was born on June 29 to mother "Madison" and father "Tony." This is Madison's fourth calf and we now have a herd of seven. Come see our growing herd this summer!

It seems that temperatures everywhere have been extreme compared to most summer seasons. Except, that is, here at SF Zoo, where we have been experiencing our traditional San Francisco weather patterns comprised of cool air, fog, a little drizzle and then often quite beautiful sunny late afternoons. If anything, we represent a break from the heat! Let’s hear it for our archetypical summer weather!

Next week is National Animal Caretaker Week and is a celebration of the hard work and dedication of those individuals that care for our animals here, and are part of a larger effort to protect and preserve wildlife. The dedication and enthusiasm our animal team has shown is reflected by their spirit and passion with what they do. Make sure to check out our social media next week to meet some of our incredible staff!
CONSERVATION HIGHLIGHTS

On July 14, we celebrated World Chimpanzee Day, a day dedicated to humankind’s closest living relative. Chimpanzees are highly intelligent and live in complex social groups across the continent of Africa. With 350,000 remaining in the wild, they face many threats including habitat loss, disease, and wildlife trafficking. Our troop here at SF Zoo help connect our guests to better understand this endangered species. On this World Chimpanzee Day, and every day, our goal is to inspire action and raise awareness to ensure a hopeful future for this magnificent species!

On July 13, we celebrated Bawang's 41st birthday! Bawang, along with the other members of our western lowland gorilla troop, enjoyed a variety of yummy treats. On special days like birthdays, and every day, we want to bring awareness to these peaceful, family-oriented animals who help to educate our guests about the importance of gorilla conservation. Looking for ways you can help gorillas? Recycle your old cell phones here at SF Zoo! This simple action protects gorilla habitats by reducing demand for coltan , a mineral mined in Central Africa's rainforest.
