Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Golden Gate Heights Playground Re-Opens Following Renovation With a design inspired by its wooded surroundings, a nature play area to spark creativity, and a dramatic spiral tower soaring above it all, the newly-renovated playground at Golden Gate Heights Park opened to the public this week. The $2.8 million makeover also includes a climbing wall, monkey bars, slide, basket swing, spinner, rolling arches and spring disc steps. The nature exploration area, created by repurposing logs and other natural materials, offers opportunities for unstructured play and discovery. San Francisco Children and Nature, a collaborative that increases children’s access to nature, provided design and construction oversight of the exploration area. The renovation is part of the Let'sPlaySF! campaign, a partnership between us and the San Francisco Parks Alliance to transform the city’s 13 most timeworn playgrounds into dynamic hubs for creativity and family life. Thanks to District 7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar, San Francisco Public Works, the Golden Gate Heights Neighborhood Association, and everyone who made this project possible! Golden Gate Heights Park Renovation RPD to Phase Out Gas-Powered Leaf Blowers with Two-Stroke Engines Gardeners maintaining the City’s parks, open spaces and public plazas will soon turn over a new leaf—trading gas-powered blowers with two-stroke engines for electric battery pack models instead. Beginning next month, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department will cease purchasing gas-powered backpack blowers with two-stroke engines, replacing them over 18 months with greener, quieter electric blowers. These battery powered blowers reduce noise to non-damaging levels and do not release the toxic exhaust emissions of two stroke cycle gas-powered blowers. For more information, click the link below. Leaf Blower Phase Out Tennis and Learning Center Students Compete in SF Junior Open The Tennis and Learning Center (TLC) program is an innovative Recreation and Park Department program that provides after school tennis instruction, academic tutoring, and leadership development to youth from underserved San Francisco neighborhoods. This past weekend, four participants from the TLC program were last minute entries in the San Francisco Junior Open tennis tournament at the recently renovated Lisa and Douglas Goldman Tennis Center. This was the first tennis tournament for all four of our TLC participants and the first time TLC kids have participated in the San Francisco Junior Open. They all exceeded expectations in this highly competitive tournament, racking up a few match wins and holding their own against other players. Congratulations on this milestone and we look forward to the growth of these youth as both tennis players and students! Our Park and Rec Story: Marianna Ramirez July is National Park and Recreation Month! With everyone living within a 10-minute walk of a park in San Francisco, be sure to get out to your local park or discover a new one this July and share your experience with us! Use the hashtag #OurParkAndRecStory and tag us at @sfrpd and @nrpa_news. A Park and Rec Story we’d like to share comes from Marianna Ramirez. She works at our Crocker Amazon summer day camp, where she’s worked for two summers. She has also run several tot soccer classes, worked at the Potrero Hill and the Garfield Square emergency child and youth care centers, and coached teams in our winter indoor soccer league. One of her most heroic moments however came last month, when a camper suddenly choked on a potato chip. The camper’s face turned red as he struggled to breathe in front of the whole camp. Marianna, without hesitation, attempted to dislodge the chip by grabbing him from behind and hitting his back with the base of her palm. When that didn’t work, she applied the Heimlich Maneuver, which knocked the chip out immediately. The whole incident happened within five seconds. Thank you Marianna for your quick actions and all of your work in taking care of San Francisco's youth! Park & Recreation Month Shine On SF and the Golden Trees Shine On SF is a coalition committed to creating a clean and cared-for San Francisco, rallying a city of caretakers and reinstilling civic pride. The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department is excited to be a part of this coalition. As a part of Shine On SF, be sure to participate in a citywide art project throughout the summer by sharing what makes San Francisco shine on via cards on living “Golden Trees” throughout the city, including in Golden Gate Park, Union Square, and In Chan Kaajal. For more information, including an interactive Golden Tree map, click the link below. Shine on SF Nina Fabunmi Selected as Artist for India Basin Hypecourt We're excited to share that Nina Fabunmi, a local artist who is a part of the Hunters Point Shipyard Artists community, has been chosen as the artist to collaborate on India Basin Shoreline Park's planned hypecourt mural. This aspect of the larger India Basin Shoreline project would resurface the existing basketball court and transform it into a multi-use hypecourt, with a mural design that would pay homage to the area’s rich African American history. Nina will work with the community, including local youth, to come up with a design for the court's mural. Learn more about the artist at the link below. SF Merionettes Join the VacciNATION! Over the last few weeks, all Bay Area counties have seen at least a doubling of new COVID-19 cases, causing concern that unvaccinated people are more at risk than ever. Our Video of the Week comes courtesy of SFGovTV and features city leaders sharing why you should get vaccinated. Vaccines continue to be by far the best way for us to manage this pandemic. With vaccines, deaths and severe illness resulting from COVID-19 are preventable. The vast majority of individuals who end up hospitalized and the overwhelming majority dying from COVID-19 are those who are not vaccinated.
