Español | 中文 | Filipino Governor Newsom's Proposal Gives $2 Billion to Statewide Children Savings Accounts Statement from Treasurer José Cisneros "On Friday, Governor Newsom proposed an investment of more than $2 billion in statewide college savings account modeled after our Kindergarten to College Program (K2C). In 2011 when he was Mayor, Gavin and I launched K2C based on research showing that children with savings accounts will be up to seven times more likely to attend college than those without an account. Today, as a result of Newsom’s vision back in 2011, 46,000 public school students in San Francisco have K2C accounts and have $8.6 million saved for college. I am beyond thrilled to see this program go statewide, and provide low-income students with $500 to start saving for college." Recorded Virtual Celebration DCYF and K2C Engage Community Hubs in College Savings We are so excited to be working with the Community Hubs (CH) at the Department of Children, Youth, and their Families (DCYF). This April, talented SFUSD students at Community Hubs participated in a poster contest where they creatively expressed the theme of summer fun and college savings. Honoree’s winners will win $50 to $500 in scholarships. Good luck to all students’ participants, we cannot wait to see your artwork! Additionally, we are hosting in-person deposit days at two community hubs in May and look forward to exploring opportunities for continued collaboration this summer. This month we want to share with you the story of Trang Huyen Nguyen. Trang immigrated from Vietnam some years back with the hope to find a better future for her students. She is a parent of a kindergartener and a fourth-grader from E.R. Taylor Elementary School. When she learned about K2C four years ago from a letter in her student’s backpack, Trang was excited to learn about the incentives K2C offered. She also liked that the money she deposited was in a secure place and the money was specifically for her student’s future college expenses. Her hope for the future is for her students to follow their interests, talents, and dreams. She knows that saving now will allow her students to follow their education in the future. SFUSD Spotlight Barbara Berman, Principal at Tenderloin Community School Barbara Berman just recently retired as a Principal of the Tenderloin Community School (TCS). Dr. Berman, along with the Tenderloin Community School Assistant Principal, Laura Schmidt-Nojima, has advocated for and championed the Kindergarten to College children’s savings account program. Both Dr. Berman and Ms. Schmidt-Nojima have encouraged families to take advantage of this program during distance learning by inviting Elisa Rodriguez Furey, the K2C Community Engagement Specialist, to make presentations at a variety of Tenderloin Community School family meetings, such as the Principal’s Chat, ELAC (English Language Advisory Committee) and the TCS Town Hall/Family Night. In addition, at the monthly Town Halls and Family Nights, Dr. Berman and Ms. Schmidt-Nojima continue to get the word out to families about K2C and its’ great benefits to families and students.
