This month, and every month, we honor and support our LGBTQ+ staff, members, guests, and extended community. Like the biodiversity of our animals, it is our duty and responsibility to reflect human diversity of all kinds. Our animals only see the kindness of humanity and we are committed to creating a culture of inclusion, allowing our diverse community to have a voice and feel valued.
As such, we wanted to share with you a personal piece (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=a242dd0230&e=7683a9aed3) by our Vice President of Animal Care, Dominick Dorsa, and his experiences within the zoo profession. This is an article he submitted to our member organization, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) which has oversight of 238 accredited facilities in North America. Thank you Dominick for your willingness to share your story. Happy Pride!
We’re thrilled to announce that the indoor areas of the Bernard Osher Giraffe Barn and the California Conservation Corner are now open to the public. Since these areas can get congested, we ask you to wear your masks, even if vaccinated. We will keep you informed as more areas around the Zoo continue to open. Thank you for your patience and support!
HOW PARENTS CAN HELP PREVENT
FOOD ALLERGIES IN KIDS

For some children, food allergies can be serious—even life-threatening. Nivedita More, MD, a pediatrician at Stanford Children’s Health, offers parents ways they can help prevent food allergies in young children.
According to Dr. More, the number one thing is to breastfeed the infant. Even if feeding only breast milk to your baby is not an option, partial breastfeeding, or pumped or donated breast milk, can still benefit your child.
Dr. More encourages pregnant and nursing parents to eat a varied diet. She also suggests a new concept to introduce common food allergens earlier in a child’s life to prevent food allergies later.
Parents should also keep in mind that many things can cause symptoms that resemble a food allergy. If your child has a reaction to something, Dr. More recommends consulting with your pediatrician or a medical expert first.

Earlier this week, on May 31 to be exact, we celebrated World Parrot Day! Did you know there are over 270 species of parrot? They come in a variety of colors and have a curved beak, zygodactyl feet (meaning they have four toes on each foot, two pointing forward and two projecting backward), and generally eat nuts, seeds, fruits, and insects. Check out (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=cccdf04b1b&e=7683a9aed3) our green-winged macaw cracking some nuts to celebrate!
