REMEMBERING COBBY & PRINCE
We are saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Cobby at age 63. He passed quietly on June 5, 2021 as the oldest male chimpanzee in the U.S.

Cobby was a gentle soul and leader of our chimpanzee troop since his arrival here in the mid-1960s. He was a performing chimpanzee and human-reared. As such, his relationships with his caregivers was almost as important as his relationships with his troop members. According to the staff who cared for him, they say that what they will miss most is how he expressed his “goodnight” to them with a soft pant-hoot.

Cobby was a respected protector and companion, and over his lifetime, he was seen by over 25 million visitors. In fact, generations of people from the San Francisco Bay Area have come to know and love him.

We mourn the loss of this beautiful soul whose caregivers remark what a privilege it was to care for him for so many years. He is the epitome of the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens, resilient, empathetic, strong and loved by all.

We love you Cobby. You are irreplaceable and will be missed.

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Prince, 15-year-old Mexican gray wolf. Prince was a wonderful ambassador for his wild counterparts and was valuable in edication our guests about the challenges of habitat loss and human, wildlife conflict. He will be missed!
