Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks  Great Highway Joint Hearing on June 10 On Thursday, June 10, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission and San Francisco Municipal Transit Agency (SFMTA) Board will hold a joint hearing regarding an update on the Great Highway, to hear community input, and to discuss the development of a possible pilot project along the Great Highway south of Lincoln Way. The item on the agenda is an informational item and will serve as the kickoff for a robust, multilingual outreach and engagement process. Tune in on June 10, beginning at 1 p.m. at sfgovtv.org. Great Highway Information Shoreview Park in Bayview Hunters Point Reopens A once-overlooked park in Bayview Hunters Point reopened earlier this week with a community celebration after a $3.3 million renovation. Shoreview Park’s overhaul features a new children’s play area with a custom skywalk and 25-foot slide. The renovation also includes a new picnic and barbeque grill area, a lawn, outdoor fitness equipment, native plant landscaping, 14 new trees, strategically placed seating, new lighting and accessible pathways. Thank you to everyone who worked to make this vision possible, including Mayor London Breed, District 10 Supervisor Shamann Walton, former District 10 Supervisor Malia Cohen, Assemblymember David Chiu, State of California Natural Resources Agency, San Francisco Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development, San Francisco Public Works, the Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure, the Recreation and Park Commission, the San Francisco Police Department, KOMPAN, and many more! Shoreview Park Reopens India Basin Groundbreaking on June 17 Join us for a groundbreaking event marking the beginning of remediation work on the India Basin project on Thursday, June 17 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at India Basin Shoreline Park (Hunters Point Boulevard and Hawes Street). The event will feature a speaking program, park activities, giveaways, live entertainment and more! India Basin Waterfront Parks Monumental Reckoning on June 18 Join Mayor London Breed and city officials for reflection and remembrance at the opening of sculptor Dana King’s Monumental Reckoning, a special Juneteenth event honoring Black history. It will take place on Friday, June 18 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Music Concourse in Golden Gate Park. Monumental Reckoning is a public art installation consisting of 350 statues representing the first souls kidnapped from Africa in 1619, bound for enslavement in America. These ancestors will surround the area where a monument to slaveholder Francis Scott Key once stood. For more information, click the link below. Monumental Reckoning Stern Grove Festival Announces 2021 Lineup Stern Grove Festival announced its line-up for its 84th season this week, with big names such as Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Tower of the Power, and Too $hort. The shows are free, however, this year reservations are required to gain admittance. Reservations open 12 days in advance of each particular performance. Stern Grove Festival Flower Piano to Return to the SF Botanical Garden September 17 to 21 The San Francisco Botanical Garden this week announced Flower Piano would be returning to the garden from September 17 to 21. Flower Piano Nature Exploration Area at Heron’s Head Park Concept Design & Survey We are excited to share with you the concept design for the Nature Exploration Area (NEA) at Heron's Head Park. The NEA will create a unique space that allows for active play, passive recreation, gathering with friends and family, and creates pockets for exploration to stimulate the senses and inspire imagination. Many thanks to those of you that participated in the in-person design jams and provided ideas through the community survey.  What do you think about the new design? Nature Exploration Area Survey Public Pools Preparing for Lifted Restrictions Changes are coming to Rec and Park pools based on the state’s lifting of health restrictions, meaning more room for classes and plans for drop-in swim. Launching on Saturday, June 12 in Golden Gate Park, SOUNDWALK is a GPS-enabled work of public art that uses music, composed by Reid and performed by Kronos and others, to illuminate the natural environment. SOUNDWALK is custom-tailored to its setting, and has been created to encourage a deeper connection to nature and exploration of iconic spaces.
