Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks City Breaks Ground on India Basin Shoreline Park Last week, we kicked off the restoration of India Basin Shoreline with Mayor London Breed, State Senator Scott Wiener, Assemblymember David Chiu, and the Bayview community! The cleanup, led by Bayview-based Rubecon Builders, marks the first phase in a once-in-a-generation environmental justice project that will deliver a $140 million shoreline park to the heart of the Bayview. Thank you to Governor Gavin Newsom and State Assemblymember Phil Ting for your continued advocacy on this project. Thank you to our nonprofit partners including the A. Philip Randolph Institute, San Francisco Parks Alliance, and The Trust for Public Land. We're excited to get to work on the most ambitious park project in a generation! Groundbreaking at India Basin Shoreline Park Art Installation Honoring Black Lives Arrives for Juneteenth In commemoration of San Francisco’s Juneteenth holiday, London Breed last week unveiled Monumental Reckoning, a two-year art installation in Golden Gate Park honoring Black history and lives. The piece, by Bay Area artist Dana King, consists of 350 black sculptural figures standing 4 feet high in the park’s Music Concourse. Representing the 350 souls kidnapped from Africa and forced onto the slave ship San Juan Bautista in 1619, they surround the empty pedestal where a statue of Francis Scott Key once stood. Protestors toppled the statue on Juneteenth of 2020. Key, who wrote the lyrics to the Star-Spangled Banner, was a slave owner and abolition opponent. Thank you to everyone who made this possible, and to everyone that was able to attend this event. For more information, click here the link below. The virtual dedication will take place on Saturday, June 26 on Zoom from 1 to 2 p.m. with advance registration required. Aquatics Page Tom Ammiano Gets the Varsity Letter he was Denied as a Gay Teen Read the article below, courtesy of ESPN, that highlights Tom Ammiano, who recently received his high school varsity letter 63 years later. Ammiano is a prominent LGBTQ activist, as well as a former San Francisco supervisor and California state assemblymember. Ammiano believes that his effeminate mannerisms led his New Jersey high school to deny him his varsity letter. He finally received it this month at the age of 79.
