Earlier this week, on June 21, we celebrated World Giraffe Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness for the tallest land animal on the longest day of the year. To recognize the day, we partnered with the new LEGOLAND Discovery Center Bay Area to announce the name of their 20-foot-tall, 4,000 lb. giraffe mascot made of over 20,000 LEGO bricks. Our very own giraffe, Sarah, picked the winning name from among five bananas, each etched with one of the final five names. The winning name is Millie! LEGOLAND Discovery Center graciously gifted SF Zoo with our very own "Mini Millie" and now you can enter a contest on our Facebook page (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=751676e43f&e=7683a9aed3 https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=6025a69a2f&e=7683a9aed3) to see if you can guess how many LEGO bricks "Mini Millie" is made up of. In the case of multiple correct answers, a winner will be picked via a random drawing. The winning prize is a special giraffe Adopt-an-Animal package, a giraffe-themed LEGO set, and tickets to LEGOLAND Discovery Center Bay Area! The contest runs through Monday, June 28.

The bald eagle was chosen as the United State's national bird in 1782 and is found exclusively in North America. June 21-27 is National Pollinator Week! More than three quarters of all flowering plants rely on insects and other animals for fertilization. National Pollinator Week is a time to celebrate pollinators and spread the word about what we can do to protect them. The San Francisco Zoo & Gardens is an excellent place to see these busy bees, beetles, and butterflies in action. Top spots are Gail’s Fragrance Garden, the Insect Zoo Butterfly Gardens, and Greenie’s Conservation Corner.
