Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks  Art + Pride 2021: Reflections As we close out Pride Month, we would like to invite you to view Art + Pride 2021: Reflections. Youth Art Exchange students are participating in this exhibition, hosted by the Harvey Milk Photo Center as part of its annual gallery exhibition during Pride Month. Artwork will be on display at the Harvey Milk Center for the Arts (50 Scott Street) through August 7, with virtual and limited in-person viewings. For more information and to view, click the link below.  Art + Pride 2021 July is Park and Recreation Month As we close out June, we're excited to begin National Park and Recreation Month! With everyone living within a 10-minute walk of a park in San Francisco, be sure to get out to your local park or discover a new one this July and share your experience with us! Use the hashtag #OurParkAndRecStory and tag us at @sfrpd and @nrpa_news. See you outside! Park & Recreation Month Shine on SF: Golden Trees As San Francisco opens up, Shine On SF is helping neighbors reconnect with their communities and the places they care about. Trees placed in colorful planters will be decorated with golden cards and showcased at pop-up activations in public spaces throughout the city, including parks such as Golden Gate Park, In Chan Kaajal, Union Square and more! Answer the prompt “What makes San Francisco shine?” and place it on a Golden Tree. Each site will also feature a different craft activity. At the end of the summer, the project will culminate in an art installation where the cards and the trees come together. For more information on how to participate, click the link below. Shine on SF Public Pool Drop-in Swim Times are Now Open We're excited to share that drop-in swim times have begun. This includes drop-in lap swim, senior swim, water exercise and recreation/family swim with locker rooms open. Registration will still be required for youth swim lessons, while adult swim lessons will begin in the fall. Get out and swim this summer! For more information, visit our aquatics page below. More Info Victoria Manalo Draves Lighting Project Begins We're excited to share that work has begun to install new lighting at Victoria Manalo Draves Park in the SoMa neighborhood. The project scope includes the addition of sports lighting at the ballfield and basketball court, upgrades of pathway lighting, and more. The park will be closed for the duration of the project, which we anticipate being completed later this summer. For more information and updates, click the link below. Victoria Manalo Draves Lighting Project Summer Day Camp Openings for Session Two We currently have a limited number of summer day camp slots open for our second session of the summer (July 6 to 23) including for sport, art and neighborhood camps. Interested families can call our hotline at (628) 652-2900. SF Rec & Park Staff Teams up with Willie Mays Ground Crew Program Earlier this week, members of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department's park services team joined the Boys & Girls Club at Hunters Point Baseball Field for the first day of the Willie Mays Grounds Crew program. Participating teens were trained by our staff on watering, dragging, raking and grooming the infield of the baseball diamond. These grounds crew members in training will be responsible for the upkeep of the field this summer and beyond. We look forward to seeing this diamond shine! Harvey Milk Photo Center Summer Online Classes Join the Harvey Milk Photo Center for its summer class series. Four classes are being offered, including Lightroom Classic, Developing Personal Vision, Getting to Know Your DSLR, and Great Creative Portraiture. Work on your photography skills to enhance your future summer trip photos! Registration is currently open with classes starting in July! For more information and to sign up, click the link below. Harvey Milk Photo Center Fracchia Prize 2021 High School Essay Contest Participate in the San Francisco Historical Society's third annual Fracchia Prize essay contest. The contest, co-sponsored with San Francisco City Guides, is open to any student attending a high school in San Francisco. Interested candidates are required to submit an original and properly cited written work consisting of between 1,200 and 1,600 words, based on the prompt, which is civic monuments. The top three essay winners will receive cash prizes, including $2,500 for first place, along with publication of their essays. Need inspiration? Read last year's winning essays celebrating Golden Gate Park's 150th anniversary. This year's deadline for submissions is July 15. For more information and to enter, click the link below. Fracchia Prize SF Junior Open Tournament at Goldman Tennis Center from July 19 to 23 We're excited to share the return of the San Francisco Junior Open to Golden Gate Park and the newly renovated Lisa and Douglas Goldman Tennis Center! The tournament, hosted by the Tennis Coalition, USTA NorCal, and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, with support from Taube Philanthropies, will include multiple skill levels. There will be a Level 7 Challenger tournament for boys and girls for age divisions 12s and 14s, as well as a Level 4 tournament for age divisions 16s and 18s. USTA NorCal Tournaments Ramaytush Ohlone Land Acknowledgment Resolution This past month, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission passed a Ramaytush Ohlone Land Acknowledgment Resolution honoring and recognizing the Ramaytush Ohlone people as the original inhabitants of the San Francisco peninsula. Our Video of the Week shows San Francisco Recreation Parks General Manager Phil Ginsburg reading the resolution at our groundbreaking event for the restoration of India Basin Shoreline. Thank you to Gregg Castro and Jonathan Cordero for partnering with us in the crafting of the acknowledgment. We applaud this first step and recognize it is certainly not the last.
