Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Garfield Center Completes Transformation into Dynamic Recreation Area Mayor London Breed announced earlier this week that we have opened the Garfield Center at Garfield Square after a $19.7 million renovation that includes a revamped indoor pool, clubhouse, courtyard, and public art installation, as well as a restored mural from Precita Eyes Muralists! A new Community Hub opened in the clubhouse as well that provides San Francisco students with in-person support for distance learning, healthy meals and snacks, and recreation opportunities. The new Garfield Center comprises a 3,550 square foot clubhouse and pool building, which share a single lobby area. The Center features updated showers and locker rooms, a playroom and expanded kitchen. Outside are new basketball courts and a splashpad for children. A courtyard connects the new park elements. The renovation project also includes accessibility upgrades and landscaping. The pool, once public health guidelines allow, will serve more swimmers and accommodate different uses concurrently. Children under 4 feet tall can enjoy the new shallow end while a moveable divider allows portions of the pool to be used for lessons or lap swim. A glass mural that spans the length of the pool is the first major public art project by artist Favianna Rodriguez. Standing at 8 feet high and 113 feet long, the artwork features a mother with her baby, two children, and a paletero (ice cream vendor). Thank you to everyone who made this renovation possible! The Board of Supervisors defeated a resolution to limit the wheel to a one-year extension, endorsing earlier votes by the Recreation and Park Commission and the Historic Preservation Commission to allow the wheel to keep spinning until March 1, 2025 Through this public process, SkyStar has created everyday discounts for San Francisco residents, who can purchase adult tickets for $15.30, while tickets for San Francisco children (3-12) and seniors (65+) will be $10.20, a 15 percent savings. SkyStar tickets are available for purchase and may be reserved by ordering online below. Buy Tickets Mayor London Breed Distributes New Tennis Equipment to TLC Students Mayor London Breed presented new shoes, high performance tennis rackets and balls to 12 middle school students in the Tennis Learning Center (TLC) Community Hub at the new Lisa and Douglas Goldman Tennis Center in Golden Gate Park earlier this week. The donations were arranged through Lifetime Activities, which has committed to providing each new student of the program a pair of tennis shoes going forward. Head Tennis provided rackets and balls. TLC is an innovative Rec and Park program that provides academic tutoring, leadership development, and tennis instruction to students from underserved communities in San Francisco. The opening of the Goldman Tennis Center allowed the program to expand to serve middle schoolers for the first time. Thank you Mayor Breed, Lifetime Activities, and Head Tennis for supporting youth tennis in San Francisco! Tour the Goldman Tennis Center Longtime Civil Servant and Park Advocate Anne Halsted Passes Away We were saddened to hear of the passing of Anne Halsted this past weekend. She was a longtime community leader and public servant who worked tirelessly to better our city, serving on a number of commissions, neighborhood advocacy groups and non-profits throughout the years. Her work has and will continue to have a positive impact on the lives of San Franciscans for decades to come. Anne's extensive resume includes work as a member of the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development and the Port of San Francisco commissions, as well as being a charter member of the San Francisco Open Space Advisory Committee, the former Neighborhood Parks Council, and board member of the San Francisco Friends of the Urban Forest. She was most recently a board member of the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Institute (SPUR) and City Club of San Francisco. A part of her vast legacy is her work and advocacy for the environment, public spaces and parks. San Francisco's parks and our department would not be the same without the work she has done over her lifetime. She was critical in the acquisition, funding and shaping of new park spaces, as well the improvements of existing parks. She was also integral in the creation and organization of the neighborhood "Friends of" groups that advocate, steward and volunteer for their parks, including for her own local park, Pioneer Park. With the Friends of Pioneer Park, she was able to advocate for improvements over the years including new stairways, ADA improvements, retaining walls and tree work, while bringing together her neighbors to keep the park pristine. In her own words, "Parks, in my view, have always been one of the things that bring communities together better than others." Her vision of equity, accessibility and community through parks has guided our work and we aim to continue her legacy as we move into the future. Read more at the link below about Anne and her work, courtesy of the Oral History Center at the UC Berkeley Bancroft Library, which interviewed her in 2018.
