CONSERVATION NEWS

San Francisco Zoo & Gardens has been breeding the San Francisco forktail damselfly, a critically rare species, for the past five years. Working with our partners at the National Park Service, we’ve released thousands of larvae at restored sites in the Presidio. Presidio Wildlife Ecologist Jonathan Young sent us this photo of a newly emerged damselfly. This was our first year releasing at this particular pool, so it’s exciting to see that the damselflies have survived their larval winter and are now emerging as adults! Damselflies are beneficial organisms that feed on mosquitoes and other pests. The beautiful San Francisco forktail is the rarest damselfly in the country and is found in a few ponds and streams in the Bay Area, and nowhere else.
FIRST GRADERS TAKE ACTION...THANK YOU!

While everyone was staying at home this fall, first graders at Presidio Knolls School got motivated to get outside and stay active through a Move-a-Thon project organized by parents. Students collected pledges for their time spent staying active and decided to donate that money, $2,263, to the zoo. PKS first graders also became animal welfare advocates through their Animal Life Cycles project which we are excited to share with you here (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=8ec4717a9b&e=7683a9aed3) . The student presentations are in Chinese, but whether or not you understand the language, their passion and dedication are clear! And one things for sure, the SF Zoo appeals to everyone!

As a pediatrician and mother of four, Joelle McConlogue, MD, of Stanford Children’s Health, has learned a lot about what really works for children and sleep, such as proper sleep to support children’s physical and emotional development, and downtime to process daily experiences and new skills learned.

She offers some sleep tips: for babies and younger children, a warm bath before getting into pajamas, reading a book, or singing a song can lull your child to sleep at night; and for older kids and teens listening to soothing music or reading.

“Bedtime can be so hard, and it can be a struggle, but if you put the time and the effort into trying to set those routines, it can also be a really nice time in the busyness of our lives to just connect for five to 10 minutes with our kids.”
