Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Esprit Park Poised for Robust Renovation Esprit Park is one step closer to a $7.7 million renovation designed to balance the needs of its growing Dogpatch community—from families to fitness enthusiasts to dogs and their people! The San Francisco Board of Supervisors this past Tuesday authorized the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department to accept a grant of $835,000 from the UCSF Board of Regents to be used for design services managed through the Dogpatch & NW Potrero Hill GBD. The grant is the last piece in a $5 million donation from UCSF toward the project and the last approval needed before breaking ground. The remaining funding for the project is provided by $2.7 million in Eastern Neighborhoods Development Impact Fees. Thank you to all of the supporters of this project, including District 10 Supervisor Shamann Walton. We look forward to getting to work at this park soon! For more information, click the link below. Esprit Park Renovation AAPI Month in our Parks: Willie "Woo Woo" Wong Playground May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) heritage month, where we celebrate the generations of Asians and Pacific Islanders who have contributed to our country and communities. We are taking a looking at our parks and their features, which are named after prominent AAPI people or hold significance in the AAPI community. What is now Willie “Woo Woo” Wong Playground opened in early 1927 as a tri-level landscape with swings, slides, and courts for tennis, volleyball, and basketball and was originally known as the Chinese Playground. The park has served as a hub for the Chinatown community for close to a century, with features that pay homage to the community including murals on a brick wall of the adjacent building to the east was painted by Jim Dong in 1986. The park was renamed in 2006 to honor Willie Wong, a Chinese American basketball star who played at the University of San Francisco from 1948-1950. He is considered one of the greatest players in San Francisco history and was inducted into the USF Hall of Fame in 2007. A bronze plaque on the north wall of the stairway to the building’s roof commemorates Wong. Be sure to visit this park soon, which completed a recent renovation in February, and take in nearly a hundred years of Chinatown history.
