Follow Tonka on his adventures through San Francisco Zoo & Gardens as he introduces us to our two-toed sloths, Mooney and Pookie. While Pookie, 7, is a pretty active, curious sloth and immediately checks out anything new in his exhibit, Mooney, 11, is a shy, sweet-tempered sloth who takes life very slow. You can learn more fascinating facts about our very own sloths and download some fun activities on the Tonka's Troop webpage (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=e38acb9af2&e=7683a9aed3) .

It's officially Polar Bear Week! This week coincides with the fall polar bear migration to Churchill, Manitoba, where polar bears gather to wait for Hudson Bay to freeze to allow them to hunt seals. Across the Arctic, most polar bears are likely to disappear by 2100 unless we shift away from the rampant burning of fossil fuels and instead shift to renewable energy sources. Visit our friends at Polar Bears International (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=430e852727&e=7683a9aed3) to get involved and learn more!
CONSERVATION HIGHLIGHTS

Though the past week brought lots of much needed rain, the past year has been exceptionally dry and difficult for native wildlife throughout California. In the Bay Area, reservoirs have dropped and ponds have dried. Two weeks ago, we were contacted by our partners at East Bay Regional Park District to assist with a rescue of Western pond turtles. There had been reports of dead turtles at two ponds in the Park District’s Sunol Regional Wilderness and upon investigating, biologists found that the ponds, which had held over 150 healthy turtles in April, had become mud traps littered with deceased and dying turtles. The remaining live turtles from one pond, found amongst nearly 50 carcasses, were transported to SF Zoo. Under the care of the Zoo’s Conservation and Hospital staff the turtles are slowly putting weight on and becoming more active. We are optimistic that, thanks to the coming rainy season, they will soon be able to return to their natural habitats.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...

The past two weekends of Boo at the Zoo were a huge success! Young guests and their families participated in a costume parade and contest and it was so wonderful to see so many smiling, enthusiastic faces and such creative costumes. Here are some of the contest winners in the Animal, Family and Judges’ Choice categories including a Raya family, Transformers, a funghi family and a Blue's Clues family. Thank you to all who participated and we're already looking forward to next year!

Halloween is also a fun time of year to see our animals enjoy a variety of themed décor and treats, mostly featuring pumpkins! All of these presentations serve as dynamic enrichment for our animals, from our birds in the aviary to our gorillas! Here are some of the highlights!
