Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Imagination Runs Wild at San Francisco’s New Nature Exploration Area Children scrambled over boulders, crawled into a kid-sized tunnel in a hollow tree, and perched atop repurposed logs this week following a ribbon cutting at the city’s Nature Exploration Area at Heron’s Head Park! Designed by Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds, with input from local children who drew their ideal play areas, the new space allows kids to explore nature, climb, and balance. Rocks and other loose natural elements provide the materials for creativity, dramatic play, and imagination. Winding, accessible pathways mix with playful shortcuts, leading to a gathering space or outdoor classroom with seating made from repurposed logs. Surrounded by native vegetation, the exploration area offers high lookout spots for spying birds and other wildlife. Thank you to our project partners: The Port of San Francisco, Kaiser Permanente, San Francisco Children and Nature, Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds, and KABOOM!, as well as to Mayor London Breed, State Senator Scott Wiener, and District 10 Supervisor Shamann Walton for their support. Workshop participants will learn about the art and skill of short-form storytelling while helping to create a traveling art installation using more than 3,000 individual Golden Cards. The Golden Cards were collected as part of the Shine On SF Golden Tree activation. Workshop volunteers will help affix Golden Cards to seven-foot-tall block letters spelling ‘SHINE ON SF’ under the direction of the installation designer. The letters will then pop-up at multiple locations across the city during the holidays. Workshops will be held at TogetherSF, (2505 Mariposa Street) on Sunday, November 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, November 13 from 1 to 3 p.m., and Thursday, November 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. During the workshops, Youth Speaks’ facilitators will provide exercises in the skill of short-form storytelling, using the Golden Cards as inspiration. An extensive public outreach process that was launched asks the public to consider a broad range of proposed updates to the car-free route on Golden Gate Park’s John F. Kennedy Drive—from modifying street closures to improving access to mobility services like the park shuttle, bikeshare, scooters, taxis and pedicabs.
