Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Weigh in on the Future of JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park This Week The Golden Gate Park Access and Safety Program, a joint effort of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (RPD) and San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), is tasked with finding solutions that balance the need for safe, car-free spaces with the need for access to Golden Gate Park for all visitors, including seniors and the disability community. An extensive public outreach process launched last week that asks the public to consider a broad range of proposed updates to the car-free route on Golden Gate Park’s John F. Kennedy Drive—from modifying street closures to improving access to mobility services like the park shuttle, bikeshare, scooters, taxis and pedicabs. We have numerous outreach events coming up this week, including virtual information sessions on Thursday, September 30 from 3 to 5 p.m. and Sunday, October 3 from 10 a.m. to noon. We also have the Golden Gate Park Accessibility Tour with Walk SF on Saturday, October 2 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. For more information and to submit feedback, click the link below. SF Merionettes Hispanic Heritage Month: Garfield Center In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we're highlighting parks with a connection to the Hispanic community. Our Video of the Week highlights the recently renovated Garfield Center, which features two pieces by Latinx artists. The first is a new glass mural that spans the length of the Garfield Center's pool, which is the first major public art project by artist Favianna Rodriguez. Standing at 8 feet high and 113 feet long, the artwork features a mother with her baby, two children, and a paletero (ice cream vendor). Its bright colors and playful shapes reflect in the water. The second piece of work is the pool building’s Primal Sea diptych mural, installed in 1980. Through the recent renovation, it was given new life with a restoration led by artist Yano Rivera of Precita Eyes Muralists. This historic mural was originally created by Precita Eyes Muralists Founding Executive Director Susan Cervantes. Learn more about the Garfield Center and its artwork at the link below.
