Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Exploratorium Exhibit Launch in Golden Gate Park on October 14 Join us for the launch of eight fun, interactive exhibits at Alvord Lake in Golden Gate Park (near Stanyan and Haight streets) on Thursday, October 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Exploratorium’s Studio for Public Spaces has partnered with San Francisco Recreation and Parks to create inquiry-based experiences around the lake. The hands-on exhibits aim to reveal, enhance, and celebrate the park’s ever-changing natural and social landscapes. Swing by for some midday exploration and activities! For more information about the project, click the link below. Studio for Public Spaces: Alvord Lake Beloved Sue Bierman Playground Goes Up in Flames A fire consumed the beloved Sue Bierman playground last Thursday. Park rangers were alerted at 11:30 p.m. that firefighters had extinguished a blaze at the children’s play area of Sue Bierman Park. Both the San Francisco Police Department and San Francisco Fire Department are investigating. The fire destroyed a play structure modeled after a pirate ship, as well as a slide and rubber safety surfacing designed to protect kids from falls. The site is the only playground within a half-mile and serves more than 1,000 children living and attending childcare in surrounding neighborhoods. A second play structure, swings, seesaw and rope climber were not damaged and are currently open. For more information, click the link below. Sue Bierman Playground Burns Conservatory Drive West in Golden Gate Park Reopens Conservatory Drive West, which runs behind the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park, partially re-opened last Friday, October 1, to provide improved access for delivery vehicles, drop-offs and drivers. Conservatory Drive West, along with several other roads leading to John F. Kennedy Drive, were closed to vehicles in April 2020 to support the emergency ordinance that provided socially distant recreation on JFK. Over the past four weeks, crews installed a new gate and other safety barriers on Conservatory Drive West, allowing for a continued car-free JFK while accommodating the needs of visitors and delivery drivers who need closer access. The project also added 15 public parking spaces close to the Conservatory of Flowers. Car-free JFK is unaffected by these access improvements. Conservatory Drive West is not a through street, and the newly installed gate ensures cars cannot accidentally turn onto JFK. For more information, click the link below. Conservatory Drive West Reopens Live Children’s Story Times Are Back and In the Parks Last week, after more than a year on hiatus, live story times returned to San Francisco in the safety of an outdoor setting at Garfield Playground. It marked the relaunch of the San Francisco Public Library's highly popular Swing Into Stories, an outdoor program of story times and bookmobile service in the parks. The story time featured picture book readings, song, fingerplays and a whole lot of fun. The vibrant YouthMobile, the City’s only kid-focused bookmobile, was also on hand. Future Swing Into Stories events will take place on Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m. to noon with park locations to be announced. For questions or for general inquiries, call the Mobile Outreach office number at (415) 554-9081 or click the link below. An extensive public outreach process that was recently launched asks the public to consider a broad range of proposed updates to the car-free route on Golden Gate Park’s John F. Kennedy Drive—from modifying street closures to improving access to mobility services like the park shuttle, bikeshare, scooters, taxis and pedicabs.
