Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Exploratorium Exhibit Launch in Golden Gate Park on October 14 Join us for the launch of eight fun, interactive exhibits at Alvord Lake in Golden Gate Park (near Stanyan and Haight streets) on Thursday, October 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Exploratorium’s Studio for Public Spaces has partnered with San Francisco Recreation and Parks to create inquiry-based experiences around the lake. The hands-on exhibits aim to reveal, enhance, and celebrate the park’s ever-changing natural and social landscapes. Swing by for some midday exploration and activities! For more information about the project, click the link below. Studio for Public Spaces: Alvord Lake McLaren Park Ropes Course Officially Opens With Treetop Thrills After nearly a year of anticipation, the McLaren Park Ropes Course is in full swing, celebrating its full opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department and Outward Bound California (OBCA) announced last week. Following the ribbon-cutting, students from Visitacion Valley Middle School then took to the trees, climbing, balancing and leaping their way through the course. The community building and character development program, which had a soft opening in November 2020, is now able to increase capacity to serve students, schools and the community. Approximately 650 have experienced the course this year. That number is expected to grow to 2,000 students in 2022 and 3,000 in 2023. While only the individual high course was open during the soft opening due to COVID-19, Outward Bound expects to open the full course early in 2022. Schools and non-profit groups serving students from low-income communities receive up to 75% scholarship for a day on the course, with students themselves attending free of charge. OBCA also offers free community days the last Saturday of each month led by highly trained educators. The course is currently booked through the end of the fall season and is now booking for spring programs to start in February. For more information on programming, contact Outward Bound here. McLaren Park Ropes Course Amazon Donates to SF Bay Sox Girls Baseball Program Amazon came out to the Sundown Cinema screening of League of Their Own last week to announce a generous donation to the San Francisco Bay Sox girls baseball program! The Bay Sox are part of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department's commitment to girls’ sports and gives more than 100 girls each year the opportunity to play baseball, promoting access and equity for a sport that has traditionally excluded them. Last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bay Sox were unable to compete in the Baseball For All National Girls Baseball Tournament. This year, Amazon has committed to ensuring the players can attend the inaugural Leighton Accardo Memorial Girls Baseball Tournament this December in Arizona! Thank you to Amazon, and to the San Francisco Parks Alliance for facilitating this donation! (Photo Credit: Sarah Felker, SF Parks Alliance) Thank You Volunteers who Built Heron's Head Nature Exploration Area Last week, with the support of over 120 community volunteers over four days, we completed some of the final work on the Nature Exploration Area (NEA) at Heron's Head Park. Thanks to everyone who came out to sand and stain logs, plant more than 200 native plants, and move 150 cubic yards of mulch. We're excited to open the NEA this November. Stay tuned for an opening date soon! Nature Exploration Area Rose des Vents Artist Jean-Michel Othoniel Honored in France At a ceremony last week, the artist Jean-Michel Othoniel joined one of the loftiest cultural institutions of the French state, the Académie des Beaux-Arts. His induction into the prestigious French academy coincides with “Narcissus’ Theorem,” a major retrospective of his work at the Petit Palais that opened last week and runs through January 2, 2022. We are proud to feature Othoniel's work in Golden Gate Park, where the La Rose des Vent sculpture was permanently installed last year in front of the Conservatory of Flowers. Mobile Rec Future of JFK Drive: Outreach Events on October 17 The Golden Gate Park Access and Safety Program, a joint effort of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (RPD) and San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), is tasked with finding solutions that balance the need for safe, car-free spaces with the need for access to Golden Gate Park for all visitors, including seniors and the disability community. An extensive public outreach process that was recently launched asks the public to consider a broad range of proposed updates to the car-free route on Golden Gate Park’s John F. Kennedy Drive—from modifying street closures to improving access to mobility services like the park shuttle, bikeshare, scooters, taxis and pedicabs. This weekend, we have outreach tabling at the Bay Wheels Adaptive Bike Share on Sunday, October 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at JFK and Kezar drives, as well as for Phoenix Day at the Bayview, Chinatown and Excelsior locations from noon to 5 p.m. For more information and to submit feedback, click the link below.
