Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks ‘Green’ Makeovers Connect SF’s Youngest Children to Nature Young children at nine San Francisco child care centers and family child care homes are enjoying green outdoor play spaces after community volunteers worked multiple weekends to create natural play spaces. Connecting Children with Nature 2021, a project created by the Low Income Investment Fund (LIIF) in partnership with the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, First 5 San Francisco, the San Francisco Office of Early Care and Education, and Rebuilding Together San Francisco, unveiled the “green” makeovers last week at a ribbon cutting ceremony at a child care center in the Bayview, Wu Yee Children's Services at Kirkwood. The transformed play areas include new plantings and gardens for experiencing nature, logs and tree stumps clusters for climbing, and loose parts to use in creative and imaginative play. In addition to the physical transformations, LIIF is providing one year of professional development and technical assistance for all the teachers on best practices in nature-based early childhood education to prepare them for meaningful outdoor learning. Thank you to all of our partners and supporters, including Mayor London Breed and Supervisors Shamann Walton, Ahsha Safai, and Myrna Melgar. For more information, click the link below. Green Makeovers of Child Care Spaces Exploratorium's Studio of Public Spaces at Alvord Lake Launches Last week, the Exploratorium's Studio of Public Spaces, in partnership with the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, launched eight fun, interactive exhibits at Alvord Lake in Golden Gate Park. The hands-on exhibits reveal, enhance, and celebrate the park’s ever-changing natural and social landscapes. We celebrated the launch with a walk through of the exhibits led by the Exploratorium for the community. Be sure to swing by soon for exploration and activities! Alvord Lake Studio for Public Spaces Heron's Head Park Nature Exploration Area Ribbon Cutting November 1 We're excited to share that we will have a ribbon cutting and community celebration for the Heron's Head Park Nature Exploration Area (32 Jennings Street) on Monday, November 1 at 5 p.m. The 12,000 square foot space is a collaboration between the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department and its partners: the Port of San Francisco; Kaiser Permanente, San Francisco Children and Nature, Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds, and KABOOM!. It will be the largest of its kind in San Francisco, with a design that allows children to jump, climb, balance and explore on natural play features. Thank you again to all of the volunteers that made this amazing park feature possible! For more details, to RSVP, and view photos, click the link below. Nature Exploration Area Geary Rapid Project Ribbon Cutting at Japantown Peace Plaza Mayor London Breed, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), and San Francisco Public Works today celebrated at Japantown Peace Plaza the completion of the Geary Rapid Project. This major civic improvement project has helped revitalize one of San Francisco’s busiest corridors between Market and Stanyan streets with more reliable bus service, safer streets, upgraded utilities, and new trees. One safety improvement in particular is a welcome addition to residents of the Fillmore, Japantown and St. Francis Square communities: a new signalized crosswalk at Geary Boulevard and Buchanan Street that improves safety for those walking to and from the Japantown Peace Plaza. In addition, the pedestrian bridge at Geary Boulevard and Steiner Street, which was used infrequently and not ADA compliant, was permanently removed in 2020. In its place, improved surface-level crosswalks and median refuges were installed. The spaces where the bridge landings were removed were renovated for the adjacent San Francisco Recreation and Parks sites, including a new expanded patio and landscaping for the Hamilton Recreation Center. We're excited for the completion of this project and the improvements in connectivity and safety it brings to our parks. Read more about the project at the link below. Geary Rapid Project Completion Annual Gardener Apprentice Luncheon Last week, we celebrated our gardener apprentices at the annual gardener apprenticeship luncheon with LiUNA!, Local 261.
