Spending time with family is one of life's great treasures. In support of family together time and in celebration of National Grandparents' Day on Sunday, September 12, any grandparent who pays admission can bring their grandchild for free! Walk-ups welcome, no need to reserve in advance. Upon arrival, look for our information ambassadors to direct you. Come ride on the historic Little Puffer steam train, admire our beautiful gardens and see a variety of magnificent animals. There's an adventure for everyone of every age at the Zoo!
How do you move a 4,500 lb. male hippopotamus across the country? In a special heavyweight crate! We said farewell to Bruce earlier this week as he moved to his new home at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens, where he will become part of their hippo pod as recommended by the AZA’s Species Survival Plan for hippos. Bruce will be known as “Tucker” there, and we hope he becomes a father someday! It certainly took a village to move him, and we thank all of our staff and flight teams for their assistance in making this move go smoothly!
STAYING SAFE WHILE HIKING WITH KIDS
Hiking with your children can be a year-round adventure in California. Julia Pederson, MD (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=c66749e633&e=7683a9aed3) , a pediatrician at Stanford Children’s Health and an avid hiker, outlines ways to prepare and have fun with kids of all ages when hiking.
“When I think of hiking with kids, I think one of the most important things that we can do as parents when we’re planning that hike is to adjust our expectations,” said Dr. Pederson. “We have to remember that the journey is really the destination.”
Preparation is also key to helping make these outings run smoothly, and Dr. Pederson includes some essentials in her adventure bag: extra food and water; a small first-aid kit with bandages for cuts and blisters, an ACE wrap for ankle sprains, a pair of tweezers in case you get any ticks, and bug spray.
She also recommends bringing an emergency blanket, a sun hat, sunblock, and sunglasses; an extra layer of warmth, like a knit hat and an additional T-shirt; map, flashlight and whistle.
“Some of the most common questions that I receive from parents tend to be related to poison oak rashes, tick exposures, maybe an ankle sprain, or bug bites,” said Dr. Pederson.
“It’s amazing how virtual medicine can be helpful in that way. I deal with almost all poison oak now virtually,” she adds.
Dr. Pederson offers some local resources with recommendations on where to hike and what you will see, as well as some of her favorite books that can inspire you to enjoy the outdoors with your child.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...
Earlier this week we celebrated International Vulture Awareness Day! Vultures are vital to the health of ecosystems & limit the spread of disease by consuming carcasses that would otherwise slowly decay. 70% of vulture species are threatened, endangered or even critically endangered. Let’s do our part to support nature’s clean-up crew.
Members in good standing are invited to attend the Annual Meeting of the San Francisco Zoological Society on September 21.
