Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Juri Commons Reopening Celebration on September 13 Join the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, the San Francisco Parks Alliance, and San Francisco Children and Nature for the reopening celebration of Juri Commons (324 San Jose Avenue) on Monday, September 13 beginning at 1 p.m. Help us celebrate the $1.65 million renovation, which includes a new children’s play area, nature exploration area, fitness equipment and railway elements honoring the site's history. The event will feature a ribbon cutting, speaking program and more! The renovation is part of the Let’sPlaySF! Initiative, a partnership that seeks to inspire creativity and play throughout the city by renovating some of the city's most timeworn playgrounds. For more information about the project, click the link below. Juri Commons Renovation Jerry Garcia Amphitheater to Reopen September 18 with SF Shakes We're excited to share that Jerry Garcia Amphitheater will be reopening on Saturday, September 18 with the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival's production of Pericles, Prince of Tyre! Join us on Saturday, September 18 beginning at noon for a special ribbon cutting ceremony, with the production to follow. The amphitheater underwent a nearly $1.5 million renovation to improve its pathways, entrances, accessibility, seating and more. The renovation also expanded the flat paved space adjacent to the accessible parking lot to better support events on site, as well as allow for food trucks and other event services. For more information on the production, click the link below. Pericles, Prince of Tyre John Shelley Drive in McLaren Park Partially Reopens to Vehicular Traffic John Shelley Drive west loop, which has been closed to vehicular traffic since April 2020 as part of the City’s emergency ordinance to provide socially distant recreation, partially reopened this past weekend to allow vehicles to travel on John Shelley Drive from the intersection with Cambridge Street to the Upper Reservoir parking lot near the big blue water tower. This change ensures all park visitors can access the recently renovated Redwood Grove Playground and Group Picnic Area and the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater, which will re-open on September 18. For more information, click the link below. McLaren Park Temporary Detour for Conservatory Drive West We’re currently making adjustments to our roadways near the Conservatory of Flowers through the end of September to allow closer access to the popular cultural attraction for delivery vehicles, along with a small number public parking spaces to improve access for visitors who may not be able to walk or bike. John F. Kennedy Drive will be unaffected by this project. If you’re cycling up Arguello Boulevard into the park during the construction period, you will be detoured away from Conservatory Drive West and onto Conservatory Drive East. When we’re finished, Arguello and Conservatory Drive West will re-open for vehicle access and continue to have pedestrian and bike access. Ong was born in San Francisco, and grew up playing at Chinese Recreation Center. She was working on American Airlines flight 11 on September 11, 2001, and is credited with being the first person to alert authorities to the deadly hijackings. Her call was the first warning that the United States was under attack and it helped lead to the grounding of all flights across the country. In 2011, the Chinatown recreation center where Ong played as a child was renamed in her honor. Ong’s bravery and courage will never be forgotten.
