Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks City Launches Next Phase to Determine Future of JFK Drive An extensive public outreach process launched today asks the public to consider a broad range of proposed updates to the car-free route on Golden Gate Park’s John F. Kennedy Drive—from modifying street closures to improving access to mobility services like the park shuttle, bikeshare, scooters, taxis and pedicabs. The Golden Gate Park Access and Safety Program, a joint effort of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (RPD) and San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), is tasked with finding solutions that balance the need for safe, car-free spaces with the need for access to Golden Gate Park for all visitors, including seniors and the disability community. Through scheduled online office hours, in-park tours, and the program’s Online Open House and survey, anyone can weigh in on the configuration of closed streets in Golden Gate Park, as well as which new or improved mobility options should be implemented to expand access to the park for everyone. Outreach also includes virtual open houses on Sept. 30 and Oct. 3 as well as pop up information centers at neighborhood farmer’s markets and in Golden Gate Park every Sunday in October. Following public input and technical analysis of each proposal, the Golden Gate Park Access and Safety Program will submit its recommendations to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in late winter. Next Phase of JFK Drive Jerry Garcia Amphitheater Opens Following Major Renovation Jerry Garcia Amphitheater, an outdoor concert venue nestled in McLaren Park, re-opened Saturday following a $1.45 million facelift that made it more comfortable and accessible for both performers and audience members. Renovation work included paving and expanding the area adjacent to the parking lot to allow better access for food trucks, upgrading ADA features, installing bike racks, increasing storage capacity for the stage and more! The San Francisco Shakespeare Festival kicked off its 2021 Shakespeare in the Park season after the ribbon cutting with Pericles, Prince of Tyre! The Festival will hold free performances at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater throughout September. A special thanks to Mayor London Breed, Assemblymember David Chiu, District 10 Supervisor Shamann Walton, District 11 Supervisor Ahsha Safaí, Assessor-Recorder Joaquin Torres, the Friends of the Amphitheater and everyone who supported the project! Jerry Garcia Amphitheater Reopens Nature Exploration Area Breaks Ground at Heron’s Head Park Construction began last week for the 12,000 square foot playspace at 32 Jennings St., a collaboration between the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department and its partners: The Port of San Francisco; Kaiser Permanente Thrive, San Francisco Children and Nature, Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds, and KABOOM!. The playground, called a Nature Exploration Area (NEA), will be the largest of its kind in San Francisco. The design allows children to jump, climb and balance on boulders and locally sourced trees. Winding, accessible pathways mix with playful shortcuts, including a kid-sized tunnel made from a large, hollow tree. Repurposed logs form a gathering space or outdoor classroom. Surrounded by native vegetation, the playspace also offers perches for spying birds and other wildlife. For more information, click the link below.
