ZOO HIGHLIGHTS

Yesterday was World Gorilla Day, a day to bring awareness to these peaceful, family oriented animals. These magnificent creatures have no natural predators but are at critical risk because of humans. We are proud to be home to four critically endangered western lowland gorillas who help to educate our guests on the importance of gorilla conservation.

As a part of World Gorilla Day’s 5th Anniversary yesterday, we participated in Gorillas on the Line, an initiative with Eco Cell to collect mobile phones. Cell phones and other small electronic devices use coltan, a metallic ore to keep them powered, and which is found in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo forests, home of the critically endangered Grauer’s gorilla. Illegal mining of coltan has devastated wildlife populations there, with an estimated 80% decline of this species’ population. Fortunately, coltan is recyclable, and by simply recycling old electronics responsibly, we can reduce the pressures on the forests.

In addition to collecting cell phones at the Zoo, we partnered with several organizations who helped collect phones, including Girl Scout Troop 61575, the Ingrid B. Lacy Middle School, The Marine Mammal Center and Andytown. Together, we collected 145 mobile devices weighing 44 lbs.! Thanks to all who contributed! We will continue to collect cell phones for the next couple of weeks, so if you have any, please drop them off at the Membership Office!

We are thrilled to announce the return of "Nigel's Big Adventure" on October 1! Nigel, our 8-year-old male burrowing owl who resides in the Koret Animal Resource Center (ARC), invites you to join him on his big adventure through San Francisco Zoo & Gardens! Follow the clues, meet some of Nigel’s friends and learn some fascinating facts along the way! Have fun, it’s going to be a hoot!

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of beloved chimpanzee, Beth. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss. Beth, 43, arrived at SF Zoo & Gardens in 2019 and was often engaging and interacting with visitors, and had such a sweet nature. She will be dearly missed by staff, volunteers and guests alike.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...

Earlier this week, we celebrated World Rhino Day! As with so many species, conservation is more important than ever. The more people know about rhinos, the more these magnificent creatures will have the chance to thrive. On our social media channels we shared some of the incredible training our staff does with resident rhinos Boone and Gauhati.
