Remembering Sureshot
We are mourning the recent passing of our beloved female bald eagle, “Sureshot,” at the approximate age of 40 years old (estimated birth is 1982), who resided at Eagle Island and most recently near Greenie's Conservation Corner where participants in our youth programs could observe her (and she could observe them!).
After being injured in the wild, Sureshot was placed here by U.S. Fish and Wildlife, to be both rehabilitated and for the Zoo to serve as a new permanent home. Living in the tranquil setting of Eagle Island among wild migratory birds, guests would come from all over to see if they could spot this beautiful and iconic eagle sitting along the beach and on low hanging branches. According to her animal caretakers, she had a strong personality, and would often greet the staff with a high-pitched vocalization. Sureshot enjoyed new and engaging enrichment items that she came to enjoy over time, such as a Hol-ee roller and favorite food items, and even “fishcicles” on warmer days. In this new space, her personality really began to shine. We were able to see her confidence grow as she engaged with enrichment as well as participating in voluntary training sessions.
SF Zoo has long been a haven for wild animals rescued and deemed non-releasable after being injured or compromised due to human intervention. Sureshot served as an important ambassador of her species, helping to tell the incredible story of our work in maintaining the largest captive-breeding and release program for bald eagles in the country that ran from 1985 to 2007. She will be missed greatly.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...
Earlier this week, we celebrated our dutiful silverback, Oscar Jonesy’s, 41^st birthday! Our troop enjoyed an incredible celebration (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=477d8d0e1f&e=7683a9aed3) featuring decor from the Pixar animated film, Up. The rainbow layered ice cake was made of grape juice, orange juice with blue food coloring, and chopped bell peppers that are frozen in water and the banana split included chow mash, banana, canned pumpkin, strawberries and sprinkles.
To help our troop's wild counterparts, you can recycle old electronics that contain coltan, a mineral mined in prime gorilla habitat in eastern Africa, right here at San Francisco Zoo. Bring any small electronics (except laptops) to the Membership Office before September 1st and they will be recycled through Gorillas on the Line (GOTL), an electronics drive organized by accredited zoos across the country.
CONSERVATION CORNER
We are proud to be home to two adorable koalas These cute marsupials are native to the eucalyptus forests of eastern Australia and are solitary except during mating season. With fewer than 80,000 remaining in the wild, koalas are currently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Though being fully protected by the Australian government, their current threats to survival include habitat loss, disease, drought and vehicles strikes. We need to be a voice for these beautiful animals so we invite you to come out and see our koalas and learn more about what you can do to help make an impact.
