The stadium's west side was packed to witness elite level soccer at this historic facility in Golden Gate Park. Established in 1995, the San Francisco Nighthawks call Kezar Stadium home. They are an American women's soccer club and a founding member of the Women's Premier Soccer League, the second tier of women's soccer in the United States and Canada. SF Nighthawks   People of the Promenade in Golden Gate Park People of the Promenade is a series of short stories, based on conversations with parkgoers we’ve met along car-free JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park: Billy has lived near Golden Gate Park since the psychedelic 1960s. In his time, he’s watched icons like Janis Joplin and The Doors perform at the park. Of Joplin, he said, “To hear the sound of her voice just makes me shiver, you know what I mean? She was something else. She will always be my favorite.” Having witnessed the evolution of Haight Street and Golden Gate Park over the decades, he laments, “It’s not the same anymore.” But Billy doesn’t mind the recent car-free changes, because now he can cruise the Promenade with ease as he listens to blues music on his speaker.   Remembering USF Alumni and NBA Legend Bill Russell We remember the great Bill Russell, a basketball legend and civil rights pioneer who passed away over the weekend. Russell moved to the Bay Area at a young age before attending the University of San Francisco (USF) alongside his lifelong teammate and fellow future Basketball Hall of Famer K.C. Jones. His collegiate career with USF Men's Basketball began at Kezar Pavilion in 1953 with 23 points and 13 blocks in an upset over 10th-ranked Cal. He is one of eight players to win a NCAA and NBA title, as well as an Olympic Gold Medal. He was also the first Black head coach in the NBA, and first to win a championship. He was a true giant who had an enormous impact on the game and society. Read more about his life and legacy from USF at the link below. Missing both hands and feet, he is on a journey to reach his goal of making his Varsity baseball team. He talked to eight of our Jr. Giant teams and emphasized two life lessons: work harder than anyone else and embrace help from the people in your life. Afterwards, he practiced with participants, including taking batting practice and playing catch. Our Video of the Week is the trailer for his biographical movie depicting his baseball journey.
