ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
Welcome to a New Kudu Calf

We recently welcomed our second Greater kudu calf of 2022! The new female, named, "Margaret," was born on July 26th to mother “Carmela,” and father “Tony,” who also sired “Madison’s” recent calf. Carmela and Margaret have taken the big leap out into the three-acre, mixed species African Savanna with the rest of our herd. This habitat features native African plants to reflect the beauty and diversity of the savanna environment, and was designed to give the animals room to interact and move about. Come out and see our growing herd at the magnificent African Savanna this summer!
The Carousel is Now Open!

We are thrilled to announce that the historic Dentzel Carousel is now open! As one of the most beloved attractions here at the Zoo, it is the last existing menagerie lovingly hand-crafted by renowned carousel builder William H. Dentzel in 1921. During the last few months we worked on restoring the structure of the building which included replacing structural cables, adding new drainage and gutters and a fresh paint job. The Carousel is open daily from 10:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and we are excited to welcome you back for a ride!
Congratulations to Our Fish School Graduates

Our annual March of the Penguins was a huge success, with more than 700 people coming to the Zoo early on the morning of August 6th to participate in the annual rite of passage for our penguin chicks. A highlight of this year’s March was the presence of Ukrainian Consul General Kushneruk Dmytro, who named one of our new chicks “Nadiya,” which means “hope”. Zoo Guardian members received special perks at the March, including early admission, reserved prime viewing areas, and food and beverage service. Preventing Sports Injuries this School Year
Playing sports is a practical and fun way to keep children healthy and active -- and finding a way to get the most out of sports while also keeping kids safe is important for parents. According to Christine Boyd, MD (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=f91053b1ce&e=7683a9aed3) , of Stanford Medicine Children’s Health (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=1d58adc31e&e=7683a9aed3) , easing into sports is a good way to kick things off. Start slowly with family walks, Frisbee games, bike riding, or hiking in the weeks leading up to school.

Consider how many sports your child will participate in each year, as keeping up with a demanding sports schedule can be a strain for your child. Making sports fun for kids is vital, especially for the younger children who may not be ready to appreciate the competitive nature of sports. Finally, a sports physical with your child’s pediatrician is another way to help your kid prep for their favorite sport. This visit can be combined with an annual wellness exam. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...

Earlier this week we celebrated (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=8bad12f46a&e=7683a9aed3) one of the most well-known species on earth during World Lion Day. These majestic, social felines once roamed throughout Africa and India, and in parts of Europe. Now lions are found in only 8% of their historic range in Africa, with a small Asian population remaining in India's Gir Forest.

Human settlement is a major factor contributing to habitat loss and depletion of wild prey. Fortunately, lions are now present in a number of protected reserves where their numbers can be closely monitored. By protecting lions, we are also protecting the health and well-being of the savanna, wildlife, and communities who live alongside them. We are grateful to Jasiri and Sukari who are incredible ambassadors and help educate our guests about the importance of lion conservation. Together, we must ensure a future for these magnificent animals.
CONSERVATION CORNER
Replate Hits Six Month Mark
As a conservation organization, we are proud to have just hit the six month mark of our partnership with Replate, a technology-based social enterprise that connects and delivers surplus food from businesses to communities in need. Since early January, we have donated unsold daily prepared foods, leftover catered meals and frozen and packaged food items to Replate, resulting in zero waste. As part of its service, Replate provides statistics to its clients, giving a snapshot of both environmental and community impact, allowing businesses to reduce, measure and manage donations. Here are the stats for the impact our food donation program has made since January, helping meet our sustainability goals.
