ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
Mexican Gray Wolves are "Golden"
Our newest conservation ambassadors have now all been named! As a nod to the wolf named for animal advocate and actress Betty White who passed away earlier this year, a generous family recently announced the names of the three unnamed Mexican gray wolf sisters that are particularly "golden." They've chosen to celebrate the actresses who played the Golden Girls (Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty) and their own daughters with the combined names of: "Courtney Bea," "Jenny Rue," and "Jamie Estelle." In celebration of their monarch, we augmented our own Betty as "Betty Michele." Welcome to all of these grand ladies!
International Orangutan Day
Friday, August 19 marks International Orangutan Day, as orangutans worldwide are celebrated and recognized. Here, our two Bornean orangutans, male "Berani" and female "Judy" are industrious, curious and interact well with one another. Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus), are endemic to the island of Borneo, whose rainforests are among the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. Sadly, nearly 30% has been destroyed in the past 40 years due to deforestation such as logging, expansion of palm oil plantations through human activity. Bornean orangutans are critically endangered, and recently named in the Top 10 (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=072f6f982a&e=7683a9aed3) of the World's Most Endangered Animals by earth.org.
Fruit is the #1 food of any orangutan diet, though Berani and Judy really enjoy different types of browse (vegetation) from our beautiful gardens. You’ll likely see Judy meticulously “twigging” in her favorite browse – banana leaf, which grows just below their passageway - with tools she’s created out of other browse or enrichment items. Berani, our more sophisticated gentlemen, enjoys all edible flowers grown right on site, such as roses, hibiscus and pansies.
On this International Orangutan Day, we hope you will join us in celebrating this amazing species. Oh, and be sure to stop by to see Berani and Judy at the Great Ape Forest extension!

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...
The Koret Animal Resource Center (ARC) celebrated World Lizard Day on August 14th! The ARC is home to several different lizard species including: "Dozer" and "Gunner," the blue-tongued skinks, "Miss Bianca," the bearded dragon, "Spike" and "Petrie," the uromastyx and "Nessie" the legless lizard. Many lizards are important members of the food web because they fill a role as both a predator and prey species. What is your favorite fact about lizards?
CONSERVATION CORNER
Migratory Monarch Butterflies Now Endangered
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) which releases the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, its global extinction risk status for animals, fungus and plant species, recently listed the migratory monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus plexippus) as endangered. Migratory monarch butterflies, a subspecies of the monarch butterfly, are threatened by habitat destruction and climate change. Known for its migrations from Mexico and California in the winter to summer, the native population has shrunk between 22% and 72% over the past decade, with its western population declined by an estimated 99.9% between the 1980s and 2021. Concern remains as to whether enough butterflies survive to maintain the populations and prevent extinction. You can help by planting native milkweed and reducing pesticide use. (From IUCN).
