Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Highlights, News & Announcements Assemblymember Phil Ting Allocates $2.3 million for South Sunset Last week, Assemblymember Phil Ting held a press conference announcing support for AAPI seniors in the Sunset, including an allocation of $2.3 million for improvements to the South Sunset Clubhouse. This facility is critical to seniors in the Sunset, as it provides a hub to exercise and socialize, as well as a place to serve nutritional meals through Self-Help for the Elderly. Thank you Assemblymember for your support! For more information, click the link below. Ting Announces State Funding For AAPI Seniors Willard Harris Honored at Recreation and Park Commission Last week, we honored Willard Harris at our Recreation and Park Commission meeting. As pioneering nurse and working at San Francisco General Hospital, she helped establish clinics in underserved communities throughout San Francisco. She would later be appointed to the Disability and Aging Services Commission by Mayor Art Agnos. She has also volunteered in Golden Gate Park, leading tours as a docent and sharing the park’s history with visitors, while providing her own personal perspective. At 102 years old, she remains an inspiration today as the oldest person registered for our recreation programs, staying active through aquatic classes at Rossi Pool and walking the steps at Kezar Stadium. Thank you Willard for all you’ve done for San Francisco and we look forward to seeing you in the water! People of the Promenade in Golden Gate Park People of the Promenade is a series of short stories, based on conversations with parkgoers we’ve met along car-free JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park: If you ask Nicky (top), the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers is the best spot in Golden Gate Park. But today he opted to join Joy (below) and try out her electric skateboard along the JFK Promenade. “It’s pretty sweet because now we have free reign to do this. I wouldn’t feel safe doing this if cars were here,” Nicky said. “This is our practice area,” Joy said. “I feel safer riding here than the streets.” The board, which is controlled by a small handheld device, can go as fast as 30 mph. For now, however, the pair is playing it safe. “This is my very first time,” Nicky—an avid snowboarder—said. “I’m just scared of the concrete. If I fall on snow, it’s perfectly fine because it’s very forgiving. So, I’m trying not to fall.” Now Hiring: Environmental Educator Interns We are hiring Environmental Educator Interns to help lead our Youth Stewardship Program (YSP) this coming year, from November 14, 2022 to September 3, 2023.
