Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks   Highlights, News & Announcements World Cup Viewing Parties at Civic Center Plaza on December 9 and 10 The World Cup knockout phase is heading toward the quarter-finals this weekend. Join us at Civic Center Plaza for viewing parties at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 9 with the Netherlands versus Argentina and Saturday, December 10 with England versus France. Come enjoy food, music and family-friendly activities along with the games! Street Soccer USA and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department have been hosting free public viewing parties for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. They take place at iconic San Francisco locations including Civic Center Plaza, The Crossing at East Cut, Union Square Plaza, and the JFK Promenade in Golden Gate Park. World Cup SF   Holiday Tree Lighting Kicks Off ‘Jingle on JFK’ Surrounded by community members, Mayor London Breed last week led the countdown to lighting of the iconic Monterey cypress tree in Golden Gate Park’s east end—a San Francisco holiday tradition that began in 1929. The annual tree lighting celebration, held by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, featured live music, dance, theater and juggling, as well as cookie decorating, carnival rides, food trucks, and interactive light installations. The celebration, Jingle on JFK, was co-sponsored by the San Francisco Parks Alliance and Illuminate. Each year, notable community members push the lever that sparks more than 550 multi-colored lights. This year it was centenarian Willard Harris and her granddaughter, Mo Martinez, as well and Dr. Nas Mohamed, a San Francisco physician and human rights activist for LGBTQ+ Qataris. Throughout the holiday season, visitors can journey through an immersive outdoor wonderland of light, nature and art along nearly a mile of car-free JFK Drive and the park’s Music Concourse. Entwined, a returning art installation by Charles Gadeken, will again transform Peacock Meadow into an enchanted forest of otherworldly shapes and ever-changing light that allows visitors to explore twisting paths, sit under colorful trees, and admire nature-inspired sculptures that flower with light. This year, Entwined is bigger and more interactive, allowing viewers to directly manipulate the sequences of changing lights and peer through portals. Known as Uncle John’s Tree in honor of Golden Gate Park’s designer and first park superintendent John McLaren, the more than 135-year-old giant cypress was first illuminated with 800 bulbs on McLaren’s 84th birthday. Holiday Tree Lighting   SF Breaks Ground on New Community Hub & Rec Center in Sunnydale Yesterday, Mayor London Breed joined community leaders to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Sunnydale Community Hub, a joint development comprised of a childcare center operated by Wu Yee Children's Services, a Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco Clubhouse, vibrant community spaces, and a full-service recreation center serving residents of Sunnydale, Visitacion Valley, and surrounding communities. Anchored at the southeast corner of McLaren Park at the corner of Sunnydale Avenue and Hahn Street, the Sunnydale Community Hub project will include a 35,000 sq. ft. campus of buildings and outdoor spaces that function as a gateway into the neighborhood and a space for community programs and neighbor-to-neighbor connections. The site will be comprised of two main buildings, including The Herz Recreation Center. The rec center will be staffed and operated by Rec and Park and provide approximately 11,500 sq. ft. of indoor space including a basketball court, bleachers, a multi-purpose room, restrooms, staff offices, and equipment storage. The Sunnydale neighborhood is home to one of the highest concentrations of young people in San Francisco, as well as one of the highest concentrations of poverty. The Sunnydale Community Hub will provide safe and accessible space to families, children, and youth for sports, recreation, and cultural events, as well as health and wellness programs and activities. The $72 million joint development is made possible by a combination of funding sources including the San Francisco Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development, San Francisco’s 2020 Health & Recovery Bond, Governor Gavin Newsom’s 2022 Budget Act, federal and state funds secured by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senator Scott Wiener, and pledges from community donors. A special thanks to HOPE SF and Mercy Housing for their leadership on this project. For more information, click the link below. Sunnydale Hub   Great Highway to Remain Car-Free on Weekends Until 2025 The San Francisco Board of Supervisors on Tuesday passed an ordinance to maintain the Great Highway between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard as a car-free promenade until Dec. 31,2025, allowing for a three-year pilot study. This would preserve the current schedule of closing the road to motor vehicle traffic on weekends beginning at noon on Fridays and ending at 6 a.m. Mondays, as well as on holidays. The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department is ready to implement the plan approved by policymakers. The pilot would allow our department and SFMTA to collect more robust data on the Great Highway’s use as both a roadway and a promenade, as well as gather additional public feedback. We would report our findings every six months to internal and external stakeholders. Ultimately, this thorough research will be used to make a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors for consideration on the Great Highway’s long-term future. BAYS is a support and action group for young people in the San Francisco Bay Area diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 45 or younger. Inspired by the AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park as an example of both a public amenity and a dedicated memorial space, the proposed rejuvenated seating area will offer the public respite from daily life, a place to sit either alone or with others, admire nature, connect to community, contemplate lives lost and reflect on survivors. It will go before the San Francisco Arts Commission's Civic Design Review ommittee on Monday, December 12 at 2 p.m. For more information on this meeting, and how to participate, click the link below.
