Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Highlights, News & Announcements Huge Crowd Comes to JFK Promenade to Watch World Cup Final What a World Cup! Thank you to everyone who came out at the crack of dawn this past Sunday to watch the heart-stopping final match on the JFK Promenade. Congratulations to the Argentinian team and Lionel Messi on winning their long-awaited World Cup trophy! Congratulations as well to the French squad and Kylian Mbappé, who fought to the very end and came up just short. Thank you to Street Soccer USA for partnering with us to help organize San Francisco's World Cup village, featuring free viewing parties in our public spaces including Civic Center Plaza, The Crossing at East Cut, Union Square, and the JFK Promenade in Golden Gate Park. It was great to see so many soccer fans, new and old, celebrating the world's game in our parks. World Cup SF Holiday Celebrations in our Parks From McCoppin Square to Huntington Park, our parks have been hosting a number of holiday events for their respective communities from tree lightings to gift sales, and much more. Be sure to swing by our parks across the city this holiday season to check out their festive features, including Entwined in Golden Gate Park, the Union Square Ice Rink and more! Summer Jobs for Teens: Workreation Application Deadline on January 4 Over the past 60+ years, our Workreation program has provided young people with early work experience in our parks. Teens, 14-17, who either live or go to school in San Francisco, are eligible to apply for a Workreation job. Teens can apply for summer positions in day camps, rec centers or parks. The pay rate is currently $18.75/hr and teens can work up to 25 hours per week during the summer. Types of jobs include camp assistant, recreation center/facility assistant, and gardening assistant. The application period will close at earliest on Wednesday, January 4 at 5 p.m. Workreation 2023 Camp Mather Lottery Open through January 6 The Camp Mather lottery is open and will run through Friday, January 6 of 2023. Family Camp will run in weeklong sessions from June 4 through August 19, with Inclusion Week from July 30 to August 5. To register for the lottery, you will need a Rec and Park account. If you don’t have an account, you can create one at sfrecpark.org/register or call us at (628) 652-2900 for assistance. Registrants will need to upload a verification of San Francisco residency after a lottery application has been submitted, with the deadline for this on January 6, 2023. Camp Mather 11th and Natoma Park Project Survey Open Through January 6 Thank you to everyone who attended our last community meeting on the new park in SoMa at 11th and Natoma. You can find the presentation from that meeting here, as well as on the project website. We're seeking input on the design and programming of this future park through a third survey, which will be open through Friday, January 6 of 2023. To take this survey, click the link below. 11th and Natoma Survey SFUSD Enrollment: Calling all TK and Kindergarten Students It’s time to apply for kindergarten and transitional kindergarten with the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD). The deadline to apply for the 2023-24 school year is Friday, February 3 of 2023. Apply by this date to ensure a spot on your list. Applying is just a few simple steps: Create a list of schools. SFUSD has a few tools to help you do this, including the Enrollment Guide and the School Finder. You can also sign up for school tours at sfusd.edu/tours. Apply online at portal.sfusd.edu, or ask for a paper application by calling (415) 241-6085. Make sure you submit your application and required documents by February 3, 2023! If you have any questions or need any help, please reach out to the SFUSD Educational Placement Center (EPC) at (415) 241-6085 or enrollinschool at sfusd.edu. If you’d like to visit in person, the EPC office at 555 Franklin Street is open Monday through from Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the Bayview office at 1520 Oakdale Avenue is open Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 100 Things to Do in Nature in San Francisco San Francisco Children and Nature has published its list of 100 ideas for outdoor fun in the city. From visiting all the lakes in Golden Gate Park to seeing the 70-foot sundial at Hilltop Park, there's something for everyone outdoors in San Francisco. Our recommendation for the week: Do a cartwheel on the lawn at North Beach’s Washington Square Park. To find this citywide collaborative's expansive list, click the link below. 100 Things to Do in Nature Upcoming Events Lakeview/OMI Kwanzaa Celebration on December 29 Join the OMI Cultural Participation Project, Invest Black SF, Village Project and community partners for its Kwanzaa celebration on Thursday, December 29 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnie and Lovie Ward Recreation Center (650 Capitol Avenue). Kwanzaa, which is celebrated annually from December 26 through January 1, pays tribute to the rich cultural roots of Americans of African ancestry. It begins with the lighting of the Kinara, a candle holder which holds seven candles (three green, three red, and one black), representing the seven principles of Kwanzaa: unity, self determination, work/responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. This event will represent Ujamaa or cooperative economics and feature a performance by Yolandra Rhodes and band. For more information, click the link below. The Village Project SF City Cats at Kezar Pavilion on January 7 Join the San Francisco City Cats of the American Basketball Association (ABA) as they play their home games at Kezar Pavillion (755 Stanyan Street). SF City Cats Nomadic Lives Artist Talk at Harvey Milk Photo Center on January 12 Swing by the Harvey Milk Photo Center (50 Scott Street) to check out its Nomadic Lives exhibit, on display through Saturday, January 14. Photographers Jamie Johnson and Norma I. Quintana chronicle the everyday lives of Irish travelers and an American one-ring circus.
