ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
The work and dreams of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. serve as in important legacy for each of us to follow in our daily lives. Here at the San Francisco Zoo, we know that we must always strive to better serve our diverse community – staff, visitors, members, guests, volunteers, and others - through inclusivity, accessibility and equity. We also learn from our animals, who do not see color, race, ethnicity, gender, or other such personal characteristics. Each year, our observance of Dr. King’s life and accomplishments reminds us of how he fought for the advancement of civil rights ― fighting for all of us — and of how it is incumbent upon all of us to help fulfill his dreams of a more just and equal society.
Please join us in remembering Dr. King on his birthday, known as a National Day of Service. And remember his dreams when you visit the SF Zoo. Take some time to reflect in the peace and serenity of our gardens, and in the presence of our amazing animals.

Audubon's 122nd Christmas Bird Count took place across the United States and Canada from December 14, 2021 through January 5, 2022. Annual Christmas Bird Counts, sponsored by the National Audubon Society and conducted by volunteers, attempt to record every individual bird encountered during one calendar day to provide a snapshot of the health of birds across the country. SF Zoo was pleased to be able to welcome back a group to count on grounds again this year. As part of the San Francisco Christmas Bird Count that took place on December 28, six birders scoured the Zoo through the drizzle and wind and, though the birds were hunkered down for most of the morning due to the cold and wet weather, 37 species and 369 individuals were seen and documented. No rare birds were sighted this year, but yellow-rumped warblers topped the count with 72 sightings followed by high numbers of bush tits, mallards, white-crowned sparrows and Anna’s hummingbirds.

Last week we celebrated National Bird day and highlighted the unique Madagascar teal. This endangered species of waterfowl is found in a narrow area along the western coast of Madagascar. Each year they cycle between very specific breeding, molting, and non-breeding habitats. These habitats are threatened by timber extraction, prawn production and rice cultivation. As one of the world’s rarest and least know species of waterfowl, it was first described in 1860, but because it was poorly known, it was considered “rediscovered” in 1969. The population is estimated between 1,500 and 2,500 individuals in the wild. Often active in the mornings, you can find our female Madagascar teal either perching high or dabbling in the pool in our bird aviaries across for the Orangutan habitat, enjoying her favorite treat, mealworms! As a special thank you to our members, reservations to visit us are being waived through February 28, 2022! During this time, members with valid membership may come to the Zoo at any time of the day by showing their membership card at the Gatehouse, just beyond Entry Village. We appreciate you, all!
