ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
Message from Zoo Executive Director
Like many, I was disappointed by the US Supreme Court’s ruling limiting the EPA's power to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, one of the known causes of polluting the air we, and our animal friends, breathe. It thus becomes more imperative than ever for conservation-minded institutions like ours to connect our visitors with the wonders of nature so that they will take action to care for and conserve this beautiful planet. Read more about our important work in animal conservation and education below!

Farewell to "Captain EO"
We are heartbroken to share the passing of legendary Magellanic penguin, “Captain EO.” At an estimated 40 years of age, he was one of the oldest penguins living under human care. He arrived to SF Zoo & Gardens in 1984, along with 51 other penguins, who were founding members of a new colony on Penguin Island and “Captain” was the last of the founding members. Captain’s legacy lives on through his 26 offspring, 31 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, many found in Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) institutions around the country.
Captain’s care over the past few years changed as he aged, requiring special attention by animal care staff due to the loss of the majority of his eyesight and hearing. This included devising special feeding techniques as the penguins were normally hand-fed in a group manner. Here, animal care staff would kneel and place their arm around him as a barrier and feed him in a way that allowed him to eat comfortably in a crowd of hungry penguins. We would like to acknowledge our outstanding animal care and veterinary teams, who provided this pioneering geriatric care to Captain. Their dedication and commitment to providing him with this remarkable care is a testament to the importance and commitment to the health and wellness of the animals at SF Zoo. We will miss you, Captain!
Introducing Our 2022 Penguin Chicks!
Our successful colony of Magellanic penguins have done it again! Introducing our five new chicks hatched in May, with the oldest two hatched on 5/7 and the youngest hatched 5/25. Until last week, they were cared for by either their parents or foster parents on Penguin Island. At five weeks old, they're not quite waterproof with only down feathers and cannot swim, so it's a good time to start Fish School, located at our off-exhibit Wellness & Conservation Center, where they will learn the basics of, well, being a zoo penguin. Here, they will learn to be fed by hand, socialize and importantly, how to swim! Finally, they will return to Penguin Island sometime this summer.
The Little Puffer is Back!
We are excited to announce that The Little Puffer is back up and running after some routine maintenance. It is open everyday, except on wet weather days, from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Come and make wonderful family memories with a ride on The Little Puffer!
Help us Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
Leaping Lemur Café has activated waste sorting dioramas above the indoor trash receptacles to educate visitors on the proper way to dispose of garbage in our restaurants. Our goal is to achieve high landfill diversion and create a ‘closed-loop’ ecosystem that both protects the environment and sustains the local community. It isn’t just informative and educational for all, but also a fun way to get involved in the important actions necessary to build a world without excess waste. Join us when you visit SF Zoo to dispose of your used resources responsibly!
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...
Birthday Bash for Beloved Senior Chimps
We celebrated the milestone 54th birthdays of our female chimpanzees, Maggie and Minnie on June 30th, a representative date for wild-born chimpanzees living under human care. The pair have lived here since the 1960s, and at this age, the pair are still active, curious and engage well with the rest of their troop and their dedicated caretakers. Their birthday bash was decorated as an "Orange You So Sweet" theme, with colorful enrichment and of course, their favorite foods which all of the chimps foraged for around their outdoor habitat. (For your information, Maggie loves carrots "with the tops," and gem lettuce, while Minnie's favorites are Roma tomatoes and dandelion greens!) Happy Birthday Minnie & Maggie!
We are happy to share that Member Reservations are no longer required when you visit SF Zoo & Gardens! As a friendly reminder, Members receive early access to the Zoo on weekends and holidays at 9:30 a.m. Thank you for your continued patience and we look forward to seeing you this summer!
