Arctic Sea Ice Day 2022
Today, July 15, is Arctic Sea Ice Day. Our friends atPolar Bears International (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=94e629210b&e=7683a9aed3) created this day to draw attention to the ice loss taking place in the Arctic. Sea ice (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=afccb56d98&e=7683a9aed3) is to the ocean as soil is to a forest: it supports the entire Arctic food chain. When ocean water gets cold enough to freeze, it expels salt, causing channels to form inside the ice. As sunlight filters through, algae grow within these channels, creating an underwater garden that forms the base of the food chain.

The key to saving sea ice is to move away from fossil fuels, the energy of the past that traps too much heat around our planet. Now is the moment to look for ways to use more energy that comes from the sun, wind, and water. A future that's good for polar bears is good for people too!
SF Zoo Named #1 Place to Take Kids in the Bay Area

Come and See Our New Kudu Calf

We’re excited to announce the arrival of a new kudu calf!  She was born on June 22 to parents, Tony and Madison.  This is Madison’s fifth calf born at the San Francisco Zoo and Tony’s seventh. Madison and calf are doing great and can be seen daily in the North Savanna.
Boosting Your Child's Gut Health
“Follow your gut” is an old adage that turns out to hold a nugget of truth. Recent research shows that children’s gut health could have a significant impact on their growing bodies and minds. According to Katya Gerwein, MD (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=7aa90d3b9d&e=7683a9aed3) , a pediatrician with Stanford Children’s Health (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=78f4d53cb5&e=7683a9aed3) , “Your gut health affects everything.” This is because the gut is home to trillions of microscopic bacteria and viruses that make up a microbiome. Usually these “bugs” are helpful and help us stay healthy.
Venus Kalami (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=a4810b91e6&e=7683a9aed3) , a clinical nutritionist with Stanford Children’s Health, agrees. “Our gut microbiome is the garden of bacteria, fungi, and other small critters that together help influence our gut health and overall health,” she says. While there are microbiomes throughout the body, the ones in the gut are particularly important. On July 14, we celebrated our closest living relateives, the chimpanzee, for World Chimpanzee Day! This date marks the first day that Jane Goodall went to Africa in 1960, beginning her groundbreaking studies on wild chimpanzees.
