Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Celebrating National Park and Recreation Month with a number of events and activities in our parks this July! Highlights, News & Announcements Contractor Approved to Build New Park at India Basin The San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission last week approved construction firm Swinerton to build the first portion of India Basin Waterfront Park, a community-led project that will train and hire Bayview-Hunters Point residents. Crews, which will include community members who have undergone construction training through the project’s workforce development program, will build the park’s infrastructure, piers, and other structures on the former industrial site at 900 Innes Avenue. Work will include rehabilitation of the historic Shipwright’s Cottage, a city landmark; construction of a food pavilion, shop building, and maintenance building; building two new piers, a floating dock, gangway and marine rails; and more. Recruitment and job readiness trainings are underway for community members interested in working on the project through a collaboration between Rec and Park, A. Philip Randolph Institute, and the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD). Contract Approved to Build New Park at India Basin Supervisor Gordon Mar Introduces Legislation on Great Highway Pilot On July 26, District 4 Supervisor Gordon Mar introduced legislation that would maintain the Great Highway between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard as a car-free promenade on Friday afternoons, weekends, and holidays under a three-year pilot study. The first Supervisor hearing for the legislation will be scheduled in September, with more information to be found here. Read more from the San Francisco Chronicle at the link below. Supervisor Mar Introduced Great Highway Legislation Jobs for Teens: Apply for Workreation Over the past 63 years, our Workreation program has provided young people with early work experience in our parks. Teens, 14 to 18, who live and go to school in San Francisco, are eligible to apply for a Workreation job. The program has offered local young people the opportunity to become a part of the workforce, tackle new challenges, learn responsibility and professionalism, and gain valuable job skills. Apply before Wednesday, August 3 at 5 p.m. Workreation SF Lawn Bowling Club Celebrates Member Arnie Barros' Centennial Yesterday, the San Francisco Lawn Bowling Club (SFLBC) celebrated their member Arnald "Arnie" Barros, who turned 100 years old! Raised in Shanghai as an accomplished equestrian, soccer and softball player, dancer and motorcyclist, Arnie and family relocated to Hong Kong after WWII and finally to San Francisco in the late 1950s. He later became a tournament-level ten-pin bowler, a sport that would aid him in lawn bowls when he joined the SFLBC in 1990, and where he continues to bowl today! He served as club president from 1997-98 and was the longtime coordinator of games and socials, helping to spread this great game to San Franciscans. SF Lawn Bowling Club Operationalizing Equity: Oakland's Town Camp The August 2022 issue of the National Recreation and Park Association's monthly magazine features an article penned by Nick Williams, our new superintendent of recreation and community services. As director of Oakland Parks, Recreation and Youth Development, Nick had two priorities— neutralize disparities and laser focus on Oakland youth. Read more at the link below. Operationalizing Equity: Oakland's Town Camp Upcoming Events SF Pro-Am at Kezar Pavilion on July 28 After a two-year hiatus, the 42nd annual San Francisco Bay Area Pro-Am basketball league has returned to Kezar Pavilion (755 Stanyan Street). The league features many talented hoopers ranging from professionals to college players, with league alumni including Steph Curry and Gary Payton. The final game of the regular season is on Thursday, July 28 beginning at 8 p.m. with the playoffs set for August. For more information including the full schedule, click the link below. SF Bay Area Pro-Am Basketball League Friday Teen Nights at India Basin Shoreline Park Starting July 29 We're excited to share Friday Teen Nights will be coming to India Basin Shoreline Park (Hunters Point Boulevard and Hawes Street) this summer! There will be FREE food for teens, an inflatable obstacle course, LED arcade games, a mobile gaming truck and more! Teens will have a safe place to kick back and enjoy themselves out at the park. Teen Night Interest Form Golden Gate Bandshell Shows on July 29, 30, 31 and August 3 Join us for FREE shows at the Golden Gate Bandshell to close out July. Swing by for an evening with Alpha Rhythm Kings on Friday, July 29 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. for Soul/Jazz/R&B Happy Hour. On Saturday, July 30 the Golden Gate Park Bandshell Kids Festival returns from 11:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Wrapping up the weekend, we have a birthday celebration with Be1ng Sound for Reggae Sunday on July 31, hosted by DJs Irie Dole and Guid8nce from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. To kick off August, we have a Market to Bandshell Singer/Songwriter Wednesday on August 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. with Sunset Hill, Skinny Katz, and ACA-Word, produced in association with Sunset Mercantile. GGP Bandshell Sundown Cinema at the Marina Green on July 29 Sundown Cinema is in San Francisco's parks for its 2022 season from India Basin Shoreline Park to the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater. Sundown Cinema GGP Band Shows: Flotsam & Jetsam: Song of the Sea on July 31 Join the Golden Gate Park Band for a concert series on Sundays throughout the summer at the Golden Gate Bandshell. Wrap up July with the next show, Flotsam and Jetsam: Songs of the Sea, featuring Conductor Craig McKenzie from 1 to 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, July 31. Golden Gate Park Band SF Nighthawks versus the China Women's National Team on July 31 The San Francisco Nighthawks face-off against the China Women's National Team this Sunday, July 31 beginning at 4 p.m. It will take place at Kezar Stadium (670 Kezar Drive) with free admission to the game, and will be the only free event on the Chinese Women's National Team's tour. Swing by and cheer on the home team! Established in 1995, the San Francisco Nighthawks call Kezar Stadium home. They are an American women's soccer club and a founding member of the Women's Premier Soccer League, the second tier of women's soccer in the United States and Canada. For more information, click the link below. SF Nighthawks Swing into Stories Comes to Garfield Playground on August 2 The San Francisco Public Library's (SFPL) YouthMobile is coming to the park! Movement and play are essential building blocks in fostering literacy and a love of reading and the SFPL is bringing stories and song to San Francisco's parks through its Swing into Stories program. It takes place at a different park each Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The next will take place on August 2 at Garfield Playground (Treat and 26th streets). Join us for a high-energy storytime in our beautiful outdoors! The YouthMobile offers a diverse selection of children’s library materials available for check-out with an SFPL library card. From the city’s only kid-focused bookmobile, staff circulates materials, creates library cards and provides the public with information about library services and programs. Swing into Stories National Night Out on August 2 Join the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) for its National Night Out, which is an annual community-building campaign that promotes community partnerships and neighborhood comradery with the goal of creating safer and stronger neighborhoods. On Tuesday, August 2, SFPD invites neighborhoods to organized block parties that feature music, cookouts, contests, youth events, and visits from emergency personnel. Many of these events take place in our parks, including Mission Playground, Duboce Park, Muriel Leff Mini Park, Herz Playground and Boeddeker Park! National Night Out Neighborhood Appreciation Day on August 13 Join our Neighbrhood Enrichment Services team on Saturday, August 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Potrero Hill Recreation Center (801 Arkansas Street) for a day of fun activities! There will be a sports clinic, art activities, free food, clothing drive and more. San Francisco Merionettes Artistic Swimming Team Tryout Interested in expanding your aquatic regimen? Join the San Francisco Merionettes Artistic Swimming Team. This youth organization provides a chance for swimmers to progress and learn their craft.
