Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks AIDS Quilt Panels Adorn City Hall Ahead of June 11 & 12 Showing Panels of the AIDS Memorial Quilt adorned the Mayor’s Balcony at San Francisco City Hall earlier this week, 35 years after their first public display. Join us this Saturday and Sunday for a free, historic display of the Quilt –the largest ever in San Francisco –in Golden Gate Park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Born as an act of love and protest during the darkest days of the AIDS crisis, the Quilt today remains a powerful symbol of hope, love and activism and is a powerful teaching tool for health and social justice, with sections of its 50,000 panels traveling to hundreds of communities each year. SF Pride Rec & Park Coaches Lead their SFYBL Teams to Championships As we switch gears from spring to summer, we'd like to look back at the San Francisco Youth Baseball League (SFYBL) season and recognize a couple of championship coaches who coached our Rec and Park baseball teams. Coach James Dresser has been with our department for 12 years and has coached nearly every sport we offer from tot soccer to girls golf within the age range of 2 to 11 years old. This year, his Sunset Spiders, pictured on the left, won the championship in their SFYBL division, his second championship of the year. His spring girls basketball team based out of Palega Recreation Center also won their league. Congratulations on the big year, coach, and we look forward to seeing you at our girls sport camp at Miraloma Park this summer! Dean Wilson has been a recreation leader in our department for 11 years where he has worked a variety of sports, including flag football as both a coach and referee, basketball, and baseball. He moved from working at St. Mary's Recreation Center to West Sunset Playground about five years ago and has since won three SFYBL championships on the west side of San Francisco, endearing himself to the community. Pictured on the right, his West Sunset Cubs won its most recent championship this year. Congratulations Coach Wilson to you and your team and we look forward to seeing you at our sport camps this summer! It also included House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Mayor London Breed, community leaders, and more. The ceremony's Pink Triangle symbol was used by the Nazis to label and shame homosexuals, but has been reclaimed by the LGBTQ+ community as a symbol of pride.
