Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Community Celebration at Skatin' Place This Saturday, June 18 Put your skates on and join us for a community celebration at Skatin' Place in Golden Gate Park this Saturday, June 18, from 11 a.m. to noon, as we officially reopen the famous roller skating spot after installing a psychedelic ground mural on the newly repaved asphalt. The mural, by artist and longtime skater Aimee Brucker Stevland, pays tribute to the history of roller skating in Golden Gate Park. It is as colorful, vibrant and fun as the skating community who has been making magic there for decades. The minimalist design also serves a purpose: providing spatial orientation for skaters to maintain their balance as they circle around and over it. The durable coating surface is expected to give the mural longevity to ward off peeling and fading—even with heavy traffic. The weather resistant coating will also allow for easy maintenance and retouching. This event is hosted in partnership with The Church of 8 Wheels. Skatin' Place is located on the new JFK Promenade in Golden Gate Park near 6th Avenue and Fulton. (Photo Credit: Casey Whalen) The Power and Beauty of the AIDS Memorial Quilt Thank you to everyone who joined us last weekend at Robin Williams Meadow in Golden Gate Park for the largest display of the AIDS Memorial Quilt in San Francisco history. It was the 35th anniversary of the quilt and Rec and Park was honored to be a major partner for this historic event. Just like Golden Gate Park, the quilt is in its own right a national treasure that connects so many people around the world. We say that Golden Gate Park is the keeper of San Francisco’s stories—and it that way, it was truly the perfect venue for the quilt. Each panel tells the story of love, loss, comfort, compassion and protest. Among the speakers joining Mayor London Breed for the opening ceremony Saturday were The White House’s Harold Phillips, Director of the Office of National AIDS Policy; and Admiral Rachel Levine, the Assistant Secretary of Health for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the first transgender federal official confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
