ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
Best Father's Day Ever
Looking for something to do with the dad in your life for Father's Day? Gift your dad a Zoo Membership (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=6ead979c5c&e=7683a9aed3) or a Guardian Membership (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=156149a65b&e=7683a9aed3) and come out for a visit this weekend! You will see some prolific animal dads, like kudu, Tony, and snow leopard, Jimmy G., and you can even treat him to a special SF Zoo beer. The specially brewed lager, IPA and hazy double IPA are named after groups of animals and your dad is sure to enjoy!
New at the Zoo: Kookaburra Hatching
We are thrilled to announce the recent hatching of a kookaburra chick. The laughing kookaburra, which is in the kingfisher family, hail from eastern Australia. Laughing kookaburras are part of the Species Survival Plan (SSP), a collective breeding effort of Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) facilities to ensure genetic diversity and species longevity. We are proud to be one of a handful of zoos to successfully raise several laughing kookaburra! This adorable bird will remain off exhibit until more mature.
Celebrate World Giraffe Day
On June 21st, we look forward to celebrating the tallest animal on the longest day of the year. Here at SF Zoo & Gardens, we have five reticulated giraffe females, Barbro, Bititi, Eve, Sarah, and Ingrid. Reticulated giraffes are found exclusively in the Horn of Africa and are experiencing a “silent extinction.” Twenty years ago there were an estimated 38,000 reticulated giraffes while today there are less than 10,000 individuals. Come out and see our giraffes this weekend to learn more about what you can do to help one of the most well-known animals on Earth.
Happy Pride!
We're happy to share that Pride merchandise is available for purchase in the Gift Shop! From socks and sweatshirts to shot glasses and plush animals, there is something for everyone. Make sure to stop by on your next visit!
Donate to Gorillas on the Line
The Gorillas on the Line (GOTL) campaign runs through September and we need your help! Please donate your old cell phones, tablets, chargers and other small electronics in the Membership Office. These devices contain a mineral called coltan which is mined in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is also pristine gorilla habitat. Recycling old cell phones helps reduce the demand for coltan which protects gorillas and humans alike. We are hoping to collect 2,500 devices by September 1st! IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...
We recently became home to three 10-week-old yellow-crowned Amazon parrot chicks! These beautiful birds were confiscated at the point of entry into the U.S. and placed here by USFWS. Unfortunately, birds native to South and Central America that are illegally smuggled represent one of the largest threats to South American birds. Our very own South American Tropical Rainforest & Aviary exhibit focuses on the ongoing crisis created by wildlife trafficking, as illegal smuggling has threatened the very existence of many animal and plant species. Learn more about the chicks here.
