ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
Congrats NBA Champions!
Can we hear a woot!? We congratulate the Golden State Warriors as NBA Champs! And starting this week, you can celebrate your pride with our pride - our African lion pride that is! Come see Sukari and Jasiri, mother and son, in their newly expanded habitat! We recently demolished one of the grotto walls to double the size the habitat, allowing the cats more room to roam. They're still getting used to their environment and we are expecting more plantings there soon, so stop on by and see our cats on your next visit!

Celebrating Giraffes All Week Long

The summer solstice on June 21st was the longest day of the year, and also World Giraffe Day, celebrating the tallest animal with the longest neck! In honor of this important recognition day, we celebrate giraffes all week long. Our herd is made up of five reticulated giraffes, Barbro, Bititi, Eve, Sarah and Ingrid. Reticulated giraffes are found exclusively in the Horn of Africa and are experiencing a “silent extinction.” Twenty years ago there were an estimated 38,000 reticulated giraffes while today there are less than 10,000 individuals.

We believe that if you connect with giraffes at our Zoo, you will in turn develop a personal responsibility to care for and protect the natural habitat of giraffe in the wild. Let’s come together and be a voice for one of the most well-known animals on earth.
It's National Pollinator Week!

This week, June 20-26, is National Pollinator Week! More than 20,000 species of insects, birds, bats, and other animals contribute to the pollination of wildflowers and crops. National Pollinator Week is a time to celebrate pollinators and spread the word about what we can do to protect them. San Francisco Zoo & Gardens is an excellent place to see busy beetles, bees, and hummingbirds in action. Top spots are Gail’s Fragrance Garden, the Exploration Zone Butterfly Gardens, and Greenie’s Conservation Corner. Don’t forget to visit the observation hive in the Insect Zoo to see all the activity that goes on inside a working honeybee hive. Visit www.pollinator.org for more information and activities. And visit our web site (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=8bc9420dcc&e=7683a9aed3) to find color-by-numbers, courtesy of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service!
Celebrate Red, White & Zoo!

Join us for a special Fourth of July themed BBQ in front of the Lemur Cafe on July 2-4 from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. We'll be serving up burgers, chicken and corn on the cob and our special Zoo Brew will be available on draft. Reserve your spot today!
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...

American Eagle Day took place earlier this week and we celebrated our very own ambassador, Sureshot. Sureshot was rescued in 1997 but because of her injuries, she was deemed non-releasable and rehabilitated, and has since thrived here. She helps to tell the incredible story of our work in maintaining the largest breeding and release program for bald eagles in the country that started in 1985. Bald eagles were taken off the Endangered Species List in 2007.
