ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
Donate Your Old Electronic Devices to Benefit Gorillas
We are excited to share that we are once again participating in the Gorillas on the Line (GOTL) campaign! GOTL works with ECO-CELL, an electronics recycling company to tally and recycle old electronic devices, with a portion of the funds generated through the recycling of these devices going to AZA’s Gorilla SAFE, Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and Wildlife Conservation Society for support of on-ground protection of Grauer’s and cross river gorillas. Donate your used cell phones, smart phones, iPads, iPods, tablets, Apple watches, adapters and chargers, MP3 players, handheld gaming devices and headphones and benefit the annual Gorillas on the Line (GOTL) campaign now through April 30 in the specially designated collection bin located in the Membership Office! Better yet, host a recycle collection in your class, school, or club to help save gorillas.
Remembering Richard Blum
We are saddened to report the passing this week of our long-time supporter, donor and friend, Richard Blum. Mr. Blum, an animal advocate, philanthropist, financier and husband of Senator Dianne Feinstein, supported the Zoo in many ways, and visited often with his children and grandchildren. Most recently, we dedicated our Dianne Feinstein and Richard Blum Wellness and Conservation Center in their honor. He was keenly interested in snow leopards and red pandas and supported initiatives on behalf of these species, including his role with the American Himalayan Foundation. While Mayor of San Francisco, Senator Feinstein and her husband officially opened the Thelma Doelger Primate Discovery Center and Koala Crossing, and have been instrumental in ensuring the legacy of the Golden Gate Park bison since 1984. You're Invited to ZooFest on May 13!
San Francisco Zoological Society's annual gala, ZooFest, will take place on Friday, May 13, 2022. As the Zoo's most important fundraising event, we're excited to welcome guests back to celebrate in person during "An Evening at the Oasis." Guests will be treated to a sumptuous dinner catered by McCall’s and to a special musical performance by Starship, featuring the amazing Mickey Thomas!
The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented needs at the Zoo and your support is more important than ever. All of the proceeds from ZooFest go towards underwriting the Zoological Society's animal care general operating costs and our youth education and outreach programs. Get ready for a fun night benefitting a great cause! Early bird pricing ends March 31, 2022. For more information, please email zoofest at sfzoo.org (mailto:zoofest at sfzoo.org) .
Nutrition and Food Labels
Feeding kids can be a challenge on the best day. To help make sense of the food you buy is Venus Kalami, RD, (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=e4af6fb980&e=7683a9aed3) a registered dietitian at Stanford Children’s Health. Instead of labeling foods as “good” or “bad,” Kalami recommends taking an intuitive approach to eating, meaning that parents encourage their children to listen to their body. Instead of bargaining for one more bite or following a clean-plate policy, kids learn to eat when they are hungry and stop when they are full.
When shopping, what do the labels mean? The surprising answer is, in most cases, not a lot. According to Kalami, the majority of the food packaging is just marketing.
Kalami recommends focusing on verified claims, such as a good source of fiber, iron or Vitamin C or the term “may support heart health” as these are phrases that are backed by data and science and are government-regulated terms.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...
Our Nutrition Center provides food for all of the animals here at San Francisco Zoo & Gardens and they like to offer different types of greens, vegetables and fruit to keep things interesting and diverse. Us humans do not like eating the same things all the time and neither do our animals. For example, the nutritionists offer 15 to 20 types of greens, 10 types of root vegetables and different colored apples, pears and oranges. They also like bringing in different fruits and vegetables that are not very common and maybe our animal care staff might not be familiar with. To help familiarize Zoo staff with these “unusual” varieties, they’re introducing the Fruit and Vegetable of the month.
The Vegetable of the Month this month is Kohlrabi. Learn some fun facts here (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=14eff24c4b&e=7683a9aed3 https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=3b11531938&e=7683a9aed3) .
