ZOO HIGHLIGHTS
"Turning Red" Animators Visit SF Zoo for Inspiration
"Turning Red," Pixar's newest film, premieres today on Disney+! In the film, 13-year-old Mei Lee, a confident-but-dorky teenager, is surviving the mayhem of middle school but “poofs” into a giant red panda when she gets too excited. We hosted the media event for the release right here at San Francisco Zoo & Gardens today. Our red panda care takers, Antoinetta and Tracy, are seen photographed above with Director, Domee Shi, and Rosalie Chiang, voice of main character Mei Lee!
To get inspired while animating the red panda in the film, the incredible animators took a few trips out to SF Zoo over the past few years to see our red pandas in person. Helping Zoos in Ukraine
The continuing conflict in Ukraine is devastating for Ukraine’s people and animals, cities and towns. Know that as we talk about our own animals, programs and events, our thoughts are never far away from this senseless war and those affected by it. Thank you to those of you who have reached out about the zoos in Ukraine. Our colleagues in the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria are spearheading an effort to support these zoos. Remembering Maki
We are heartbroken to share the passing of beloved ring-tailed lemur, Maki, last week. At 22, Maki was one of the oldest lemurs here at SF Zoo and one of the original lemurs who moved into Lemur Forest when it opened in 2002.
Maki captured the hearts of the public after he was kidnapped and recovered in October 2020. He is a symbol of resilience, and we are so thankful that he was able to thrive with his group upon his safe return.
Maki was a wonderful ambassador for his wild counterparts and increased awareness of endangered lemurs worldwide. His favorite food was purple grapes – he did not care for green grapes. He trusted his caretakers like no other lemur and as the lowest ranking of his ring-tailed lemur group, he often chose to eat next to them rather than his group. His personality filled the forest, and he will be forever missed!
Participate in the Western Monarch Mystery Challenge
The third year of the Western Monarch Mystery Challenge is underway in California and monarchs are on the move! This challenge is a campaign to find out where western monarch butterflies are in early spring. We know they spend winter months in groves along the California Coast. However, we know little about where migratory monarchs are in March and April. Solving the mystery of where they spend the spring is central to conserving and restoring the phenomenon of monarch migration in the West.
How to participate:
1. If you see a monarch outside the overwintering groves, take a picture (don't worry, it can be blurry). We suspect that monarchs spend the spring somewhere between the coast and the Central Valley.
2. Report it to iNaturalist (the app is free), the Western Monarch Milkweed Mappe (https://sfzoo.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=05b8326f4402b997fe7a097e3&id=e7221b6f3f&e=7683a9aed3) r or email it to monarchmystery at wsu.edu (mailto:monarchmystery at wsu.edu) and include species, date and location.
3. Be automatically entered to win a variety of prizes every week you report!
