Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Celebrate the New Permanent Car-Free JFK  Help celebrate the passing of legislation to make JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park permanently car-free this Saturday, May 7 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a signing ceremony at 12:15 p.m. and community day! The event will take place at Skatin' Place (JFK Drive near 6th Avenue and Fulton Street) and will feature activities, food trucks, entertainment and a safe place to bike, roll and stroll on the new promenade. Note that a shuttle stop will be added at the event's location for this day.   American Sign Language interpretation will be provided. Car-Free JFK Celebration Stern Grove Meadow to Re-open in Time for Summer Concerts We're excited to announce that repairs at Sigmund Stern Grove’s Concert Meadow are nearing completion and will be ready just in time for the 85th annual Stern Grove Festival! The Stern Grove Festival, the Bay Area’s longest running outdoor concert series, will return on June 12. Additional repair work in other areas of Stern Grove will continue through summer of 2023 but will not affect the concert series. Adjacent areas such as the Trocadero Clubhouse and the East Meadow will also reopen, while SFPUC crews will continue work to restore the hillside and tennis court through summer 2023. The park’s west side will also remain closed for the duration of the festival. Stern Grove Concert Meadow to Re-open Golden Gate Bandshell Shows on May 5, 6, 7, 8 & 11  Join us for FREE shows at the Golden Gate Bandshell this week, including a special Cinco de Mayo celebration on Thursday presented by Peña Toribio in association with ILLUMINATE from 4 to 7:30 p.m. On Friday, May 6, we have Soul/Jazz/R&B Happy Hour from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. with Big Blu Soul Revue. This weekend, we have the Krakaw Jewish Culture Festival on Saturday, May 7 from noon to 4 p.m. and Reggae Sunday on May 8 beginning at 4:30 p.m. with DJ Irie Dole and special guests SoulMedic and Smiley.  Next week, we have Singer/Songwriter Wednesday on May 11 beginning at 4 p.m. featuring Aprylle Gilbert, Ken Newman, and District 8. GGP Bandshell Concerts Muriel Leff Mini Park Jazz Thursdays Beginning May 5 Join the San Francisco Parks Alliance and Bay Area Jazz Mobile for a series of free jazz shows at Muriel Leff Mini Park (420 7th Avenue) beginning on Thursday, May 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. These shows will run on Thursdays through June 23. Harvey Milk Photo Center's Terra Cibus Opening on May 7 Join the Harvey Milk Photo Center (50 Scott Street) for the opening of Terra Cibus on Saturday, May 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. The artist, Caren Alpert, is a San Francisco-based fine art and commercial photographer who specializes in food, travel, and lifestyle topics. Born in New York, and raised in Tucson, Arizona, Caren earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography and graphic design from the University of Arizona. Caren started her career as a photo editor in New York working with titles such as Health and Money magazines.
