Updates, news and events in San Francisco parks Car-Free JFK Legislation Signed Amid Community Celebration This past Saturday, we hosted a ceremonial signing of the legislation to make Car-Free JFK permanent, with a community celebration that featured performances, skating, giveaways and more! Legislation Makes Car-Free JFK Permanent SF Parks Alliance Public Space Summit on May 12 Join the San Francisco Parks Alliance for the return of its annual Public Space Summit on Thursday, May 12 beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the County Fair Building (1199 9th Avenue). It will include a series of workshops, panels, and networking with people like you who understand the power of our parks. This year's speakers include Carolyn Johnson (Black Cultural Zone), Manny Yekutiel (Manny's), Shalaco & Phoenix (SFinBloom), Drew Becher (SF Parks Alliance), and our own General Manager Phil Ginsburg! Public Space Summit Golden Gate Bandshell Shows on May 13, 14 & 18 Join us for FREE shows at the Golden Gate Bandshell this week, including Soul/Jazz/R&B Happy Hour on Friday, May 13 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. with Punk Funk Mob, Pat Wilder Band, and Electrofunkadelica featuring Shaunna Hall. This weekend, we have the Storyteller's Showcase 20th anniversary event on Saturday, May 14 from noon to 4 p.m. Next week, we have Singer/Songwriter Wednesday on May 18 beginning at 4 p.m. featuring Brendan Earley, Roger Rocha, and Dizzy Twin. GGP Bandshell Concerts Garden Resource Day at Alemany Farm on May 14 Join us for our second Garden Resource Day of 2022. It will take place on Saturday, May 14 at Alemany Farm (700 Alemany Boulevard) from 9 a.m. to noon. There will be free compost, mulch, plant starts and seeds. Compost will be limited to two 5-gallon buckets per person – bring your own buckets. The UCCE Master Gardener volunteers will be joining us at this event to answer all your gardening questions. Parking is limited so please pull well over to the curb before the farm entrance to avoid vehicles coming off the freeway. Look for traffic cones and Rec and Park flags to avoid missing the entrance. Staff will be outside the farm to help direct you. Please note: The garden tool care station will not be at this event and will be scheduled for a later date to allow participants to stay longer and get all the rust off their tools. Garden Resource Day Mobile Rec at West Sunset Playground on May 14 Mobile Rec heads to West Sunset Playground (3223 Ortega Street) on Saturday, May 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Enjoy free BMX biking, skateboarding and more. Mobile Rec Beekeeping Workshop & Plant Sale at Alemany Farm on May 15 Join the Friends of Alemany Farm (700 Alemany Boulevard) on Sunday, May 15 from 10 a.m. to noon for a beginning urban beekeeping workshop with the San Francisco Beekeepers Association. It will teach participants about how to start a new hive and connect them with resources. For more information and to register, click the link below. In addition, there will also be a donation based plant sale at the Alemany Farm greenhouse from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 15. Bring your own carry tray! Alemany Farm Harvey Milk Photo Center's Terra Cibus Artist Talk on May 19 Join the Harvey Milk Photo Center (50 Scott Street) for its artist talk for Terra Cibus on Thursday, May 19 beginning at 7 p.m. The artist, Caren Alpert, is a San Francisco-based fine art and commercial photographer who specializes in food, travel, and lifestyle topics. Born in New York, and raised in Tucson, Arizona, Caren earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography and graphic design from the University of Arizona. Caren started her career as a photo editor in New York working with titles such as Health and Money magazines. In addition, she’s worked as an editor and researcher for Vogue, George, and for Miramax Films. The exhibit is currently open for viewing at the center. For more information, click the link below. Terra Cibus Community Social Doubles at McLaren Park on May 20 San Francisco tennis players, advanced beginners through intermediate, are invited to play in the Tennis Coalition of San Francisco's Friday evening social doubles series. Meet other players at your level for round-robin sets in an organized and fun environment! Community Social Doubles Sankofa Makers Market and Community Day of Healing on May 21 Join community partners for the next Sankofa Makers Market on Saturday, May 21 at India Basin Shoreline Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This quarterly outdoor market will feature local BIPOC-run businesses from the Bayview-Hunters Point community. In conjunction with the market, there will also be a community day of healing from noon to 4 p.m. that will connect attendees with community resources and feature a sound healer at 2 p.m. Sankofa Market Volunteer for Sunday Streets in the Bayview on May 22 Sunday Streets will roll into the Bayview on Sunday, May 22 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will transform streets into a car-free community space for residents and visitors to enjoy a day of free, outdoor recreation together, including the return of our Mobile Rec rock wall. Sunday Streets Volunteer Skatin' Place Celebration & Mural Installation the Week of May 16 Our Video of the Week comes from our Car-Free JFK celebration this past weekend as skaters dance with joy at Skatin' Place after Mayor Breed's signing of the legislation. Attention: Skatin' Place will begin its mural installation early next week and will be closed until early June. The recently repaved asphalt will be painted with a community-approved mural and additional seal coat layers. The mural design was created by Bay Area artist and longtime Golden Gate Park skater Aimee Bruckner. For more information about the project, click the link below.
